centrifugal fan + carbon filter

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, hoping for some advice on my indoor grow pls.

I have just upgraded my inline fan to a centrifugal fan and carbon filter but am really struggling to fit both together in the space I have available.

My questions are

- does the fan need to go directly onto the filter or can I run ducting from my filter (in the grow room) to the fan (outside the grow room - this distance would be no greater than about 1.5 - 2 meters) without loosing efficiency of both the fan and/or the filter.

- can a centrifugal fan be baffled in the same way as an inline fan ? i.e. I baffled my inline fan by having it inside a 200 litre brewers barrel and using pillows/blankets etc as a sound killer with ducting in one end and out the opposite.

Not sure about heat generation etc with the centrifugal fan.

Fan is a 200mm Ezi Air centrifugal and my filter is a Mountain/Big Air 200mm x 600mm

hey mate ive only had one centrifugal fan and it was a 250mm that hauled ass and was loud as all fuck the idea of having the fan attached to the filter is to quieten the fan as a filter goes on one end and a silencer goes on the other end of the fan what u can do is run your fan, filter and silencer outside of your tent just sit it next to the tent on the floor have the filter on the floor than the fan on the filter than the silencer and run the ducting into your tent just make sure u duct tape all joints so no air leaks and u get a good suction

as for your home made silencer people have been using there own designs i to have tried my own in a plastic tub with pillows and old rags to numb the sound i was just watching a video last night of a branded silencer on youtube the silencer has acoustic foam lined inside of the silencer the same stuff that goes into sound studio walls so i'd say they might be the way for u to go mate that plus acoustic ducting i reckon would be the goods hopefully someone with a silencer chimes in here and lets us know how good they really work

I have my filter in the tent. Both my inlet and exhaust fans are out of the tent, wrapped in a box. Centri fans are cooled by the air flowing inside them so you can wrap them up..... I also have a silencer on the exhaust, they are good but not going to make it silent. Recently saw a very quiet centri fan at a hydro shop. Was almost silent, they might be only fairly new on the market.

The centri I have are both rated at 88w and are 150mm. The have no worries doing the job through the ducting and carbon filter. Get it right the first time, I say.

I am running a 250 centri, that exhausts the tent through a carbon filter as well as the cool tubes.

I mounted my fan in a wooden box lined with carpet and packed with rags, but the sound travels along inside the duct and exits with the air, so mounting your loud fan in a sound proof box only does so much.

Also, I feel that 250 centri is too powerful for a small tent grow. Everyone says more air flow is better, but this means the carbon filter is getting jammed up with a lot more dust and crap than if the air flow was lower.

So now my carbon filter is letting a lot of smell thru on only its second grow

So Im making a fan speed controller to make the fan quieter as well as I hope extend the life of the carbon filter, and keep the smell escape down

Thanks for the feedback and advice guys. Last night I dismantled my old baffle and fan, replaced it with my centri. Bought sound deadening wall insulation and proceeded to stuff the shit out of it.

Can't believe the difference it has made ! Will be installing tonight and adding my filter. Can't wait to not here it ! Ha ha

Happy growing and green fingers to all

I couldnt agree more. I wasted a bit of money then bought two 150mm CanFans with both hooked up with Accoustic ducting.

The loudest thing in the room are the oscillating fans and they are still too loud (lol putting pillows over those would be pointless)

Great Tip: if I understood this right-

putting a centifugal fan ontop of the Carbon Filter standing on the floor of the tent would muffle the fan??

atm ive got accoustic ducting on either side of the fan wich is sitting outside the tent. That draws from the Carbon Filter mounted on the roof of the tent interior.
