The woman at my local hydro shop told me (after phoning the owner) that most of the current LED's are crap, but they are waiting for new digital (?) LED's from a US co. but prob won't arrive til after Christmas. Does anyone know a source of these 'new tech' LED's - she said she didn't know - (or maybe wanted me to wait and buy them locally?) Fair enuf but I would mind one now - my prob is limited grow space = excessive heat with hps or mh, plus with summer coming - a 90w=400w hps would be nice - but not from China... no offence. Anyone ...? :please:

Don't think anyone can recommend a good brand of LED's cause regardless of brand they are all shit.

90W LED will in no way compare to 400/w HPS.

QFT. :)

HPS is old technology. And also uses a shit load of power. LED is the future, like it or lump it. More and more companies are starting to build LED units now, so prices are going to come down :good:

If you have around $1900 to spend there is one I can recommend. I have been using this particular model and it is equal to, maybe better than a 600 watt son-t agro HPS

Expensive, yes but uses less than 1/4 the electricity and produces very little heat.

And yes the ones in the Hydro shops here and on ebay are rubbish.

LED's are shit! i just tried one for two weeks and sold it it does grow plants but slowly and the cooling fans on the LED light are loud as all fuck  i wont buy another LED light in a hurry the ones coming out of china are over rated mine was rated at 120watts i measured the power it was drawing 90watts thats 3/4th the power stated meaning they are not true 1watt LED's i used a light meter to check how bright the LED light was and its as bright as a 150-200w MH/HPS a 250w HPS shits all over the LED the LED was reading around 1900-2100 lux where as the 250w HPS reads 3000 lux at the same height the LED only covers a small area its not designed to spread light out over a certain area like a MH/HPS does so the LED light basically covers whats directly under the LED globes my 120w LED light would have covered a space of 2x1.5 foot maybe pushing 2x2 foot for a $170+ light its just ridiculous Edited by Gazza2001au

Yes HPS is old technology, but so is the combustion engine. While there are other alternatives they are not viable for so many reasons and both HPS lighting and combustion engines will last a long time. The alternatives are inferior, too expensive, or most often a combination of the two.

Yes it does use a lot of power compared to LED. When making such comparisons you must also consider the other important factors. The most important factors being imo the quality and quantity of return from your investment in power, nutes etc. (I am not talking about commercial return).

Ummmm I never said I had a prob with led being 'the future', but what I am interested in is growing cannabis in the present and at present HPS is king of the mountain.

You are much better just getting a HPS and ventilating properly, seriously do you think you can get A+ quality by putting in F class effort and using Z class equipment???

If you believe your own argument please publish your LED grow on here to prove me wrong. I am very open to change, just I like to see the evidence not just listen to prophecies of the future where we are all gowing cannabis with LED's powered by our own sense of self satisfaction.....

Thanks so much to ya'll who contributed you're thoughts and feelings to my post ... been away a few days at home ... yeh i've read it's all about the lumen per watt ratio. Apparatently most LED's on the market use only 1 watt diodes (light emitting diode) but there are others that boast 2watt, diodes, or even 3watts of light energy per diode. Most hyrod stores don't carry em bcoz of the supposedly poor performsnce, but ads boat of using only 10% of electricity compared to HPS. Yet I hear horror stories as well. I have an LED TV and it's fantastic - the light is so gentle and crisp .... anyway I have such a small flat I could make my bathroom a grow box, but need LED's bcoz of the low heat - especially growing thru the summer. My wardrobe will only supposrt two adult plants and that's with both doors open and a car sun reflector thingo taped as a 3rd wall ... any .. I know there are good LED's out there and also crap ones (Eg China, but not sure about Hong Kong). Feel free to pm me if you're an LED beliver and know where I can buy one withought wasting my money as some on this forum have. Peace, love and grooviness ..... 'sun is shining, weather is sweet' BM

Maza :bongon: :sun:

photo's: 2 bagseed hybrids (sat/ind my guess) scrogged at 4 ft in a 85cmx57cmx180cm wardrobe/growdrobe 3 weeks into flower.

Unfortunately I just spent that much on a used car ... yes, that's my feeling ... they will pay themselves off in the long run on electricity saving, plus you dont need an elaborate cooling system which is more elec$. I spose I'll just have to wait til next year ... that's when the costs are supposedly gonna drop.
