QLD Farmers Leading the Way

Up to 250 Queensland farmers are thought to be seriously considering a future in commercial hemp production.

The treasurer of the Queensland Industrial Hemp Farmers Association, Brad Alchin, says more and more people are inquiring about growing the crop, even though it is yet to be commercially grown.

Mr Alchin says he took 30 calls from interested parties in the past fortnight alone.

"We have to make sure we've got an association of farmers that actually want to grow hemp, and if hemp is actually a viable product," he said.

"We hope to give the rural industry a bit of a boost, so we diversify into other crops.

"Hemp seems to be a good way to go because the world actually needs more fibre.

"There's a hell of a lot in... it that we don't really know yet, but we're researching it all the time."
