hey ozmade, I just bought a thermostat from Jaycar for $40. They got a shop at 65 Ipswich Rd for anyone in Brisbane. website www.jaycar.com Looks like you just wire in series with your live wire and dial in a temperature. The packet said its designed for heaters but it could work for our purposes I reckon. I'll report back after I get it up an running, maybe within a week.

OK, if I get a few little terms wrong here forgive me, but you will get the gist. When I was setting up things at an old place a few years back, I asked my mate Sideshow Sparky about putting thremostats or maybe a dimmer inline for my fans. He suggested that things such as light dimmers and heater thermos were designed for things that don't pull a full load when they kick in. He said fans were inductive motors and they surged when they kicked it. He theorised that this would burn out the thermos and dimmers pretty quickly.

I got a thermostat for 95 about 2 years ago. I reckon it's really only useful if you want to use co2. Otherwise Iv'e compared venying on the thermo to venting all the time while light on, and I don't see much difference.

I also hear the faintest hum of the fan going on and off ever so quietly when I use it. I don't know if anyone else does, but I think a constant sound is less suss. A mate of mine is onto his neighbours grow, only cause he heard the fan going on and of every half hour in the middle of the night.

Your mate is correct in that a light dimmer wouldn't work, but a thermostat is a different matter. It's a temperature operated switch. It only differs from an ordinary light switch in that temperature change switches it, not your hand flicking the switch.

take a look at

look under misc and you will see my thermostat.

and

One stop thermostat shop, Even has telephone operated thermostats and timers etc

The power fluctuation is a valid point and I can only reccommend to use specifc designed thermostats etc,

My thermostat conrols my Air Conditioner in my grow room, it takes care of temputures and Humidity.

WP

oh and I wouldnt use them on your fans in flower unless you want mouldy buds.

I'm with Vas here.. I don't really think a thermostat should be needed. And if you do install one, make sure you have a second extraction fan set up to vent thru the night on a timer, otherwise when the lights go out you'll end up with the fans going off too... And when the lamps go out, the fans need to stay on, at the very least for a substantial time after lights out, and much better to be running all the time. Mould and excessive night humidity would be your reward otherwise.

You could add a humidistat to the fan line, so that it turns on or even jacks up fan speed, (if you have a fan which is safe to do this to that is) if humidity becomes excessive. This would solve the problem, but it seems to be an entirely too expensive exercise on to get too little gain, like Vas said. Incidentally, how did you solve the humidity/temp prob with a thermostat, Vas?

It could be a very useful tool, but I doubt it's going to be worth the cost... A good fan running all the time sounds a lot less suspicious too, you're right again there Wassily. :) Sounds more like a fish tank or something, if fans are going on and off all the time, and you don't have a plausible explaination, then you're going to arouse suspicion. Course, if the grow is in an area no-one goes to or can hear, this is an irrelevant issue, but I thought I'd add my 2 cents to that as well...

Geez Vas, would you say something I can disagree with for once? :) ::):
