Setting up a buket grow

Recommended Posts

Hi all im looking for advice on setting up my first hydro grow, I have the buckets and piping and will be buying the rest when I have decied on what system im going with. I am growing in a wardrobe, it will just be the two buckets. Bubblers are out of the question as they will make to much noise. I may go with bubblers next grow as i am currently designing a grow cabniet to combat noise. I need to setup something that will be easy to look after and cater to a noob like me. I will be getting a trunchie soon but not for a few months. So my question is, Is there a system that would provide for my needs and if so who can I pester via Pm's with future questions and and troubles. Thx in advance lol Edited by Black_one

yeah I agree, I don't know what people are going on about with bubblers being noisy. It must be the type of air pump. Some air pumps you need to put tubes on all the outlets before they become quiet. My airpump makes a fair bit of racket, but put hoses on all its outlets and its whisper quiet. Its an ACO208 air compressor 38,000cc

yeah Black One, agree with the guys here, bubblers are not noisy compared to other systems - I mean how loud is a fishtank? Might have to be more specific than 'setting up a bucket grow'. If your not going to use bubblers and don't want noise, seems as if it's going to be a passive type setup i.e. handwatering or maybe drippers. Go for bubblers man, plenty of info on OS. Peace. lol

It is too noisy but im interested in getting one going for my next grow. I tryd filling a bucket halfway with its lid on then putting on the pump but it still makes too much noise. BTW I have no fans running at all I pull the budding gals out everyday for part of the light cycle, they seem to love it. I am thinking of maybe going with a recirc hydro setup this time as it whould be much quieter. Remember guys its a stealth grow....

Im currently working on a inground greenhouse that will be hidden by surrounding garden. Maybe when I get this done I will go 4 bubblers to compare the different methods so if you dont mind id like to bother you both?

Brace your self for dumb noob questions that make you shoot shit outta your 2nd arsehole lol

check out recircs to start with my first was a 4 pot and was cheap.it is the same as most just had no money so improvised

went to cheap shop and bought 8 buckets at $1 each

scrounged up irrigation pipe

got submersible fishtank pump off mate(that saved heaps not buying pump)

4 small flower pots.

it didnt look profesional but worked great.

also tried 2 pot bubbler worked so so first time.but second time brilliant and only noise was cheap fishtank air pump vibrating so put it in a little foam box with small inlet hole.

id like to try bubbler system with a control bucket so theres less chance for me to stuff up.

what about the wick system.never tried it but beats hand watering everyday.have any of you guys tried it.

Yeah, I grew a plant in a simple hydro wick once... never got to flowering tho, as it was an outdoor experiment.... Early days. :) But yeah, they're great. Just have to set them up to be enough for the size plant you're growing. And make sure you've got a good wicking material.

You'll probably need a secondary reservoir and float valve if you plan on being away fromt he grow for any extended period, as MJ can use amazing amounts of water when they get large. ;) This simple addition can make the grow essentially self sufficient for anywhere from a few days to weeks. Of course, automation is never a replacement for good management and keeping a close watch on your plants tho. ;) But it can make life a lot easier.

I'll try and find a description of another type of automatic watering hydro sys... Not sure if it has a name, so I'll look for it first before sharing. Don't worry, won't be far away. :)

I have used the wick system with clones and seedlings(in rockwool) and it works really well, you still have to check your fluid in the bottom tray quite often though as it dries up fast. I used two catlitter trays and some wick i picked up at Cunninghams/cheap as chips used for the garden citronella lamps. Where can i find info. on the bubbler system you guys are talking about?
