confused by lighting

Recommended Posts

hi all, i am confused. I see post on cold lighting, does that mean there is hot lighting? sorry if that sound silly. also what colour light is for what stage of plants life.

I have a dig ballast 600 w which glows orange yellow and is hot. what is this? I have lights for aquariums. they are a bluish mauve.. are these good for something?

Any help would be most appreciated.

cheers and thank you.

Heya Losthaplot, it is called light spectrum. Blue is cooler light and mainly used in vegitative growth and red spectrums which are mainly used in flower(hot). These light spectrums that a bulb puts out are measured in "K" which is a measurement of light Heat (Kelvin=K) and where it sits in the spectrum.

for instance 14,000K will be a Blue light (output more in the blue end of the spectrum)and 6400K will be a Redder light(more towards Red end). They both have more colours in the output of the globe than red and blue, but this is how they show you the spectrum most created by that type of globe.

Thats a real simple explanation of it anyway.........

Oh, here's a picture I found on the back of one of me CFL boxes, light spectrum applies to all types of lighting.

Hope this helps....... :bongon:

Hi there Losthaplot

Lighting can be real confusing and GH info is on the money for CFL's and the definitions of hot and cold. Put any 600watt bulb up and they are bloody hot but using GH's info, High Pressure Sodium (HPS) are more in the red spectrum where Metal Halide (MH) is in the blue spectrum. They are both considered High Intensity Discharge (HID) and both HPS and MH can be used for the whole cycle, grow and head. But some people like to grow with MH and head with HPS. Personally I use HPS for the whole cycle. Doing so the growth rate in grow isn't as rapid but I've found is more dense which is what I need for SCROG. MH gave me good growth rates in veg but the bud density wasn't as good as with HPS. So now for me it's HPS the whole way.

Your aquirium lights ain't HID but more likely CFL or straight fluro and again as GH's info shows can be used for grow then changed for head to the warmer spectrum.

Hope this helps
