A COUPLE is facing up to life in jail after police found 60kg of dried cannabis in a backyard.

Police found the haul - worth up to $400,000 - stashed in industrial-sized paint tins and hidden in an underground bunker in a Kidman Park backyard on Thursday afternoon.

They also found two firearms and about 2kg of white powder which is yet to be identified.

Police will allege the drugs and guns belong to the man, 45, and woman, 26. Detective Inspector Derryn Phillips, acting officer in charge of the Drug Investigation Branch, said police were tipped off about the stash.

"The bunker is a purpose-built bunker, it runs vertically and you have to climb down into the bunker to gain access," Det-Insp Phillips said. She added it was too early to tell where the cannabis had been grown or whether it was destined for local or interstate markets.

"What we can say, this offending is at the highest level of drug offending in terms of penalty. Penalties for this level of offending amount to life imprisonment or $500,000 (fines)," she said.

"This would have some disruption effect on the local market and from that respect and an investigation point of view it's a really good outcome."

The white powder found with the cannabis was still being analysed.

Det-Insp Phillips said the sheer amount of drugs could suggest links with organised crime syndicates.
