How much power can you demand from 1 point ?

OK. there are lots of variables, so I'll speak generally. Most power points are rated at 10 Amps, which equals 2400 Watts. Depending on when the circuit was wired (and house was built), usualy the circuit is capable of suppling either 16Amps (38400 Watts) or 20 Amps (4800 Watts) to the whole circuit, but remember, there can be a heap of power points, all using up some of that 16 or 20 Amps on one circuit.

Guest Wilderbud

Hi there.

Do you think using a light socket which has prongs to bite into the power wires is OK to use?

I cut a 4M length of wire from 2 sets of party lights which had the plug attatched and no prong holes in it then I stripped the end of the wire and covered it like the original and I run one single light in one space and 2 lights in another on both leads - 48W CFs in standard fittings are used.

Not my favorite wiring system, but as long as you dont put to much load on it, and ensure that there is no exposed conductors (copper wire), it should be OK. It's probably the best & safest way to acheive what you want to do with minimal tools etc.

I guess it's a more feisable option than asking an electrician to wire up your Grow box ! And as long as your careful, it should be relitivly safe.

The cable and plug will be able to handle the 3 x 48W CF easily.

As always I recomend RCD (residule Current Device) protection. The easiest way to do that DYI is go to any electrical wholesaler, Mitre 10 or Bunnings etc and ask for a power board for a construction site with RCD protection. The best ones are `Clipsal' and about $180, but it will give you very good protection.
