Okay buddy, I've got some bad news... and some bad news.... B)

Well, you've got the dreaded scarid fly... a little more information about the setup you've got, as well as the system you're using and other little tidbits like nutes, lights, environment, (where the bloody thing is) and such would be useful, but I think it'll be generally agreed that's your problem. Scarid fly, aka fungus gnats and all kinds of other funky names, is a rather nasty pest which is difficult to be rid of without harsh chemicals, or even just giving up and starting again. They eat the roots in the larval stage, and will make conditions absolutely ripe for root rot, which is what the brown roots are.

The pyrethrum will do squat against em, they're industrial strength little bastards, and it's hard to be rid of em. There are scarid drenches of several types, which you use to soak the plant... but these usually either nearly kill, or do kill the plants, and if they ever do recover, you're either going to have substantial yeild loss and no bugs, or maybe the bugs will come back... I hate to say it, but these bastards are some of the hardest little pests to get rid of...

Unless you're a long way in, I'd say take a few clones, or even better start from fresh seed in clean media and environment, cull this plant amd start again... ;) Whatever you're growing in, don't use it again unless you can sterilise the container thoroughly... And the environment if it's an indoor plant will also have to be treated too... bleach 10% in water is a good steriliser. Don't use the same media, get fresh stuff.Oh, and you'll be wise to work out where these bugs are coming from if you grow indoors too... make sure you have complete exclusion if there are persistent vectors (bug carriers/transporters/way they get into the grow) around the growroom, and remove as many of these possible infestation points too... Check out the "prevention" thread in Taz's signature, that'll help you to get started with preventing re-infestation once you're clean.

MJ is a tough plant, and I don't doubt you could probably manage to get rid of the bugs, and maybe grow her on to harvest if she's moderately strong... but honestly, I'd say start again... you'll be much better off and you'll know what you're doing the next time round... Unfortunately sometimes we make mistakes like this, but if we never made them we'd never learn.... unless you come to Ozstoners before you start of course, and learn before you end up with these things...

Anyway, I know I'll probably be pooh poohed for suggesting the chop, but that's my honest opinion mate... sorry. Hope you do better on the next time round. ;) B)

The same thing happened to two of my plants - I was using straight peat for the first time and overwatered it to the point of supporting an infestation. I ripped them up as you did [after noticing it was dying] and seen dead roots [aka brown roots] from top to toe plus I had some scaley crap on the bottom of the stem which I assumed was eggs.

I cut my plant halfway up the stem, threw the bottom part and stuck the top into some peat and it rooted in 4 days without clonex [i never use it (tried it once and threw it away) and have more success than people who do use it - PEAT] - stems seem to root faster than branches IMHO [ive had my share of root rot as Im a soil lover].

The flies wont kill your plant man..Ive had em for years ...they were all through my house...I even see them in supermarket after theyve been in my hair and shit..you can get rid of them with new media and pest strips / stick traps but do it at the end of the cycle... ..brown roots may not be that bad..dont rip it out...just wait and see..i wouldnt spray the root area with pyrethrum...Id stik some sticky fly traps around..and use the mortein pest strips that Tazstoner recommends in his prevention thread...if the roots has blak spots/areas that stink like rotten eggs your in trouble..thats root rot...Id give them an oxy plus treatment...for a week or so..and then some bio bugs..bio bugs are goodshit man..they get a sickplant going again heaps of times for me..maybe try letting the media a little less wet if its very wet..

Good luck man

WP has already said it h202 ,hydrogen peroxide or from the hydro shops just buy OXYPLUS i always have it in my sump use it non stop.

so to solve the prob just go and buy oxyplus and follow directions.

easy as 123

ps dont pull the plant.ive had scarid fly in alot of grows with out much prob.oxyplus, oxyplus, oxyplus, oxyplus remember that and prob is solved.

psps it also gets rid of root rot and sanitises system

@bongon did you use oxyplus in your bubbler experiment.it is a must for most bubbler setups.dont let anyone tell you its not.i had a good bubbler grow.added this cause of browning roots and growth went through the roof same as in my recirc system.just start with a bit 1/2 dose and work up.as roots seem to be more sensitive in bubblers.
