POLICE have busted a major cannabis distribution network in north Queensland.

More than 40 charges have been laid against 18 people, with about a third facing charges of drug trafficking and supply.

The arrests came after a six-month investigation, Operation Juliet Somerset, which resulted in the seizure of drugs, a large sum of cash and a gun.

Police said the operation had smashed a "significant drug syndicate" in the area.

Those charged will face the Mackay Magistrates Court on July 7.
