Clone Lighting help

Recommended Posts

Gudday growers,

I have a cupboard measuring about 500w, 700d, 1200h

post-41049-0-98099700-1306641220_thumb.jpg

I want to use this area for clones at one stage, and a drying area at another

I cant fit a full length fluro in there

I was going to get a fluoro mount with 4 x 2 foot tubes... but they seem pricey

But would I be better off getting a single CFL globe 14000k, it seems to be cheaper and more available

Will the 14000k be ok for vegging beyond starting clones?

Incase they have to stay there a bit longer to wait for the flower tent to finish

What would you use for lighting clones in this space?

Cheers

Heya Pleb =) , Thats a decent size space man. You should be able to have clones and mothers in a space that big. Put a rack up above it all for drying. I use my cupboard for Clones/ Mothers/Drying and at a pinch could flower in there with a 400W.

The CFL globes I use are Growlite 125W, I use the Ultra Blue which is the 14000K globe and also have a 2700K globe in there (Yes I know this is a flower spectrum)

, what I do is get the clones going under the 14000K and as they get bigger I add the 2700K, both still on 18/6 as per Veg cycle.

I just found the clones could do with some more red spectrum as they get past the 3-4 set of leaves stage. Then If I am not ready in my flower tent I stall them up by dropping them back to just the14000K globe, works well.

Other options are a 250w MH or if you want em to pump faster, a 400w MH. Hope that helps. Peace. Gh72

Thanks guys,

Hey hopper,

I actually happen to have a 130W 2700k that I add as a booster in late flowering...

And I have a 400mh but I use it with a 400hps for flowering,

I found the 400 was too much for the space,

jamming a cooltube in there diagonal with ducting

I dont usually have a mother plant, just take a clone from the previous grow

I like to keep plant count down

14000k would be better than the 6500k spectrum for starting clones ?

My nursery is 450mm square and about 750mm tall. I used 4 x 20w cfl's in there with no probs and the plants seemed quite happy.

They are 4100K though. I would prefer something closer to 6500K but that was all I could get at the time.

I can't see the plants having a problem with the 14000K lights myself. But you best wait for someone who actually knows what they are talking about. ^_^

When you take your cuttings from other Grows are the grows from seed ?

I use T5 cool white for my clones 3 along side etch other........ i would exhaust the air from the drying room into the cloning room the babies would like all the humidity..imo

Hi Pleb

Vrod....find the CFL's are great for clones & veg, you can get them real bushy by the time their 600mm. When there's not enough depth in the cupboard, 2 CFL's staggered, will give ample light.

Yup spot on V - I'd add a further possibility - Fluro's. running up to 36" i guess similar to

Thing is with the tubes set parrallel & not over the top (horizontal) it not as 'efficient' particularly with rooting clones. Its great size for a small 'clone chamber' & a 'keeper chamber'.

grow well Pleb S

Heya Pleb =) , Yeah, it's a bit of a suprise isn't it? Clones/seeds actually require more red spectrum. I did some interesting reading on the subject awhile back and it was saying that rooting and cloning take place better under 2700k-6400k, than 6400k to 14000k.

I use a 2700K 125w CFL for my clone area on 24/0 and a combination of 2700k and 14000K cfl's for my Mothers on 18/6.

Everybody has a different was of cloning and use different light sources, but CFL's are cheap to run, easy to fit in and don't cost the earth. Only down side to them is in Winter they don't put off much heat. thermostat adjusted heat mat solves that though =) .

Have fun getting ya clone area sorted. Peace. gh72
