My first wardrobe grow

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm obviously new to all this and am in the stages of planning my first grow :) I've been reading and following a few indoor grow diaries, watching video's and doing as much research as possible. I feel like I'm about ready to get started however I have a few questions regarding how I'll have this setup and would really like to get some opinions...

This is just a personal project, so I'm not that worried about yields yet - I'd rather know that I can actually grow something without it dieing as I'm not much of a gardener (yet!).

I have been looking at a space in my wardrobe, the space is tall and not very wide - the measurements are ~2000mm high x 450mm wide x 550mm deep. My concern with this is that this won't be wide enough to let light into the lower parts of the canopy when the plant starts maturing. Also, I'd like to start with two plants, this probably isn't a wide enough space for that either? I am planning a single 400W HPS light, which'll I'll hang and ensure it's height adjustable. Also, how much heat do these lights generate? Would the light be enough to heat that small space though winter (seqld) otherwise I'll probably wait until temps start warming up again. Or, would these lights provide enough heat for clones, or do clones *really* need a heat mat?

I'm planning to exhaust into the ceiling with a carbon filter and a fan like this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/INLINE-DUCT-VENTILATING-EXHAUST-FAN-6-150MM-25W-METAL-/320578560668?pt=AU_Seed_Starting_Hydroponics&hash=item4aa3f8a29c#ht_3115wt_907 .. Do you think this will do the job, or do I *have* to get a centrifugal fan for use with a carbon filter? I live in an apartment so odour and noise would be a concern to stop noise complaints (or the neighbours dobbing on me).

I have a wider wardrobe in the guest room which was going to be my original setup - however, I don't want the prying eyes of any guests to find my girls.

I think that's all my questions for now - looking forward to replies. I can't wait to get started - I feel like I'm already addicted just watching the other grow's in the diaries :D

WElcome to OS zirophyz =) , Sacrifices must be made!!!!!!! hehe. May I suggest moving into the guest room and using the larger cupboard? hehe , You can make the cupboard VERY quiet I'm sitting 8 ft away from mine and can JUST hear it , the computer fan is louder. lol

Best bet is buy a cheap 2 door cupboard form an op shop and put it in your bedroom, I sleep in same room as mine no worries.

Check out my gearlier grows in the cupboard with 400w HPS , theres some shots of my grows in it and the design, worked super.

If I grab the link I'll post it below for ya.

Get the centrifugal fan 150mm and a good size carbon filter maybe 150x 500mm or 200 x 500mm.

Buy good equipment the first time and you'l never look back =0 Peace. Gh72

Hey guys thanks for the welcome - I honestly didn't think I would find a community like this in Aus :D

@gh72 - Yeah, makes complete sense to start a grow in a portable cupboard. Then I can take it wherever I go and don't need to make any physical changes to my unit. Why didn't I think of this myself after reading so much /facepalm ... There's a junk shop near me (and heaps of op shops - 5 within walking distance, I think) that resells a lot of old hotel furniture so I'm sure to find something suitable locally and cheap.

@weit - just read both your threads. Wow! Your cupboard setup is very schmick and I couldn't put down the computer when I started reading what you were growing in it! If I get half the results you got for my first grow I'll be doing backflips :) A q about your seeds; did you jump through any special hoops when ordering them, or just run the risk? I've read about prepaid CC's, different postal addresses etc .. I'm thinking about being naive and ordering now, waiting a few months then starting a grow (or however long it takes for me to find the perfect wardrobe and kit it out), your thoughts?

Mate , i ordered them thru planet skunk, they have a National australia bank account and ya can go and pay for them that way. i have an alias email account that i order them thru and have them sent to another address(NOT MY GROW ADDY!!!!)

3 orders for 3 so far. They just bung them in an envolope and send them (NO STEALTH!!)

Some peeps have had issues with this company, but i have not. Its the risk you take when you order seeds..some never arrive.

You cant replace good genetics so i would def get my seeds beforehand, they will be like a carrot dangling in front of you and motivate you to get it all up and running.

cheers wiet

P.S .AJ is right dont do what he did!!!.... lol :yahoo:

Heya weitlover ... I just ordered from Amnesia this afternoon and read your post tonight, do'h.. It's okay, I guess Demon/Amnesia should be okay as they have some good reviews in the seed bank guide - as this is just a test run for me I only order the cheapest seeds - Big Bang, a ten-pack feminised for $25. When I want to spend the money, and know I can grow something decent I'll spend the extra for a decent strain.

I've made a mock up of what I want my wardrobe to eventually be - I took a lot of inspiration from your setup as I liked it a lot - very neat and organised which is exactly what I want to achieve with my own setup. This will be a work in progress - I'll firstly just be getting the centrifugal fan, filter and light for the main part and build on the cloning and mother sections later. Ideally I want to make a complete self contained drobe - If I could find something wide enough I'd love to make a setup that included a small mother area, a small clone area then larger veg and flower areas. Then in the distant future I want to start using network monitored/controlled power rails, and Zigbee (wireless RF sensors or something similar) temp & humidity monitors. I work in IT and it's also a passion - plus it would be neat to collect detailed sensor data and be able to program lighting routines, see current power usage etc (all from my phone lol).

But for now, focus on the smaller task at hand .... I appreciate all comments on what I've got so far ...

hey there,

Im from seqld too.

I have moved and just started some new girls from seed, I would worry too much about the cold. i have my 20 day old seedling under a 130watt cfl and on a heat mat. the temp at the height of the leaves are 24 degrees.

they love it. there in a bathroom/laundry with no central heating. so nows a perfect time to start i say for you too..

Thanks karo .. I was wondering what kind of heat a 200 - 250w HPS light will generate to warm up a wardrobe anyway - running the light cycle thru the night would probably keep temps high enough. I don't have my gear yet, ya'll keep your fingers that the taxman is gracious with his return this year (*cough* lol bullshit *cough*) as that'll probably be funding my basic drobe.
