breath + drug test

Recommended Posts

Yeah, they call it a bong.

As to the drug test. Saw something on that a couple of days ago. Apparently you have to chew on a small piece of spongy stuff, about the size of a matchbox, for around 2-3 minutes. Then they take the sponge, put it in the reader and it detects the drug levels in the system. They didn't say what drugs it would be used for, and quite frankly I think it's a load of bullshit. The only reason the govt is able to do breath testing is because it takes only a few seconds to test ya. Imaging having to take 2-3 min for each test, it just wouldn't make for anywhere near the coverage of the RBT system.

It's been shown that drivers under the influence of cannabis are actually less likely to be involved in an accident, so I don't know what they're trying to prove other than that they can fuck over people who had a cone a couple days ago....

*sigh*

Is this the only way they test? Or can they swab test you? Or is that the swab test? lol

A swab test on the inside of the mouth is typically done for cellular or genetic analysis, not toxicological analysis. I think you have to chew on the sponge for so long to allow a decent amount of saliva to build up in it, as well as encouraging further saliva generation from the glands during the chewing process to extrude any testable substances from them.

Just a theory that last bit mind, haven't seen anything on it since that brekky tv show a week or so ago. But I do know that a swab test isn't what this is.

Random drug tests law next year

VICTORIAN police would get legal backing to conduct random drug tests on drivers if the method used could be shortened to take only a minute, Premier Steve Bracks said today.

Mr Bracks said legislation would be introduced into the next session of state parliament if the testing process could be speeded up and if the results could stand up to legal scrutiny in court.

The current system of drug testing takes up to 15 minutes to administer.

Police Assistant Commissioner Ray Shuey yesterday called on the Government to introduce random drug testing after a report showed almost one third of people killed in road accidents over the past year were affected by illicit drugs.

He said the incidence of drug-driving was even higher than drink-driving, with 22 per cent of those killed affected by alcohol.

Of the 29 per cent of drug-affected fatalities, 13.5 per cent involved marijuana, 11.3 per cent heroin or other opiates, 5.1 per cent benzodiazepines and 2.9 per cent stimulants.

Nine per cent were affected by both drugs and alcohol.

Mr Bracks said a preliminary test at a booze bus should take less than a minute.

"I think you'd need to get it under a minute ... I think it can be done," he said.

"Obviously if there's any indication you would go for further tests.

"If we can get these random tests ? saliva swabs ? so that they're quick ? we don't want drivers to have to wait 10 to 15 minutes," Mr Bracks told radio station 3AW.

"So long as they're quick and they meet the evidentiary requirements of Victorian courts."
