Vertical or horizontal lamp?

Recommended Posts

Just a few questions: What do ppl prefer vertical (eg chinabowl) or horizontal lamp (eg.lobay) and why?

Any ideas on the dimensions of these lamps light coverage, is a vertical lamp a circular coverage and a horizontal lamp a more rectangular coverage if so what would be optimal for 400 (approx 8-10ftsq)or 600w (approx 10-12ftsq) son-t-agro (and is $205 a good price for a basic 600w son-t-agro light kit complete? source: nutriflo hydroponnics in Gosford NSW, and on the net)

I am not sure about the strain but as a general rule of thumb what sort of distance would you put between two plants (minimum)?

Thanks for all the indirect help from everybody that has contributed to the site and I HOPE THEY WILL CONTINUE TO CONTRIBUTE as this resource is invaluble to ppl like myself taking more than a passing interest in growing but do not have the years of experience others have.

Thanks peace

work on 50 watts per square foot to work out how much area your light can cover. So a 400watter can cover 8 quare feet and a 600watter 12 square feet. In terms of the most efficient footprint under the light I don't know, but its a good question.

In terms of light distance it will be about 400mm. Hold back of your hand level with top of plants, if it feels uncomfortable hot then your light is too close.

$205 is a good price for a 600W light kit. I bought my 400W kit fir $250.

This is largely dependent on the strain and the grow method, some strains like to bush out other a relatively large area and others don't (unless they are tipped). The smallest "footprint" strain I have grown would have to be Northern Lights (pure Indica) they grew as if they were in a pipe and did not take up a lot more space than their pots, Sativa dominant strains on the other hand will take over the grow room if given the chance, there are also Indica dominants that will bush out and take up a bit of space.

One way to maximise the space in a grow room is to fasten some plastic garden trellis around the walls and train the outer plants to it.

Thanks for all the help Pipeman ant Taz stoner I was thinking of a 600w manta (horizontal) $220 with sontagro bulb but without the cooling gear for the light, maybe later I'll get the fan ,ducting etc.

A light footprint of say 2.5 ft by about 4.5-5ft would be acceptable for 4-5 plants from bagseeds grown DWC or recirculating hydro (similar to setups on this site)?

(after determining sex and cloning the healthy girls).

@Taz stoner are there additional penalties in NSW for training the outside plants to a trellis, the laws here are already ambiguous enough after reading some of the other posts it seems in NSW 5 or less plants is not jail for a 1st offence but that seems to be what is practiced in the courts not what is writtten in the legislation.

Thanks again for all your help

I would start a few more to allow for males, hermies and rejects, unless you want to stay within the five plant limit that is.

Not sure on that one, one of the NSW growers might know more.
