Car boot smell leads to $170,000 in drugs

Recommended Posts

Drugs with a street value of more than $170,000 were found stashed in a car pulled over by traffic police.

A 44-year-old man has been arrested over the haul of cannabis and amphetamine.

He has been charged with possessing a commercial quantity of cannabis, supplying a commercial quantity of cannabis and possessing methylamphetamine.

Alice Springs police found 6.804kg of cannabis head in the boot of the man's South Australian registered car.

They also found two bags of amphetamine weighing 0.08g.

The man was originally pulled over by police as part of routine traffic work on the Stuart Hwy on Saturday night.

While they were talking to the man, they noticed a strong smell of cannabis coming from the Ford Falcon sedan.

They searched the car and found the drugs in the boot.

Detective Superintendent Colleen Gwynne said yesterday the seizure was the result of proactive police work.

Supt Gwynne said the seizure would have a direct impact on the crime rate in the community.

``There is a distinct nexus between the supply of illicit drugs and the rate of serious crime,'' she said. ``A seizure such as this will certainly have an impact on reducing the overall crime rate within the Territory.''

Supt Gwynne said illict drugs were not only a problem for police to deal with but one for the community as a whole.

``The problem of illicit drugs is an on-going one and is a community problem,'' she said.

``In the past 18 months police in Central Australia have been making this our top priority and we have had a number of very good results.''

NOt gloating or anything, but I accidentally had a joint with a cop in Adelaide. As a musician I have smoked shit all over Australia. I was in Adelaide, talking to this guy who said that he played guitar as well, loved music and would we like to have a smoke with him as he had some killer gear. His car was close by so we jumped in. 3 of us 1 of him, pretty safe (unless he had a gun or something I suppose) AAAAnnyway!!

Pretty nice car for a musician I thought (fairmont ghia). I thought I would ask him what he did for a crust and he brushed it off with 'ahh, just in the public service' After we pressed him on the subject he said "actually I am a cop" At this point we were going to bail on him but he reassured us not to worry, he wasn't out to bust us, he was off duty and just wanted to have a smoke. He supplied it, why didn't he smoke it himself?? It turns out he just wanted the company. Fucken weird ay?? Spun me out anyway!
