harvesting when half the pistals are brown - as long as it has been flushed for at the very least a solid week.

 

You'll get smoother smoke the longer you let it cure - 2 weeks is the standard but leaving in there for 6 weeks or even longer will provide a nice even burn.

 

Harshness of the smoke is to do with the chemical left in the plant before harvest. While it's probably better to harvest them in the dark period as stated above as most the nutrients are in the roots.

While we haven't as yet had the opportunity to apply it to bud, my wife and I are avid bio-dynamic gardeners and in most instances the most optimal time to harvest things early in the morning in the few days leading up to a full moon. This is when there is the most amount of water movement in plants and their ability to produce anything, including their essential oils, etc are increased. This applies to all plants you want to use for the flower, fruit or seed :)
