Hollywood comedian and actress Whoopi Goldberg says she was completely stoned when she accepted her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress 20 years ago.

 

Goldberg, 55, confessed to having smoked marijuana to relax her nerves before the 1991 Academy Awards ceremony.

 

"I learned a great lesson though — never smoke pot before the possibility of having to talk to hundreds and millions of people," she said in a video released by celebrity website TMZ.

 

The unashamed confession was recorded in an outtake during a voice-over recording session for the 1994 animated movie The Pagemaster.

 

In the video, she recalls her shock when she was announced as the winner of the Best Supporting Actress for her role in Ghost.

 

"When he [the presenter] said my name and I popped up, I thought, 'Oh f---'... OK, up the stairs ... around to the podium … there's millions of people, get the statue, pick up the statue."

 

The actress told of how she took a phone call from her mother who could tell she had smoked because of her "glistening eyes".

 

"My mother called me and she said, 'You smoked didn't you?'" she said.

 

Goldberg described how she later watched a tape recording of her acceptance speech, saying that "you couldn't tell" she was stoned.

 

In the video released by TMZ, she admits smoking cigarettes and that pot is her habit "every now and then" because she doesn't drink.

 

Goldberg turns to the camera, playfully warning her (then) imaginary viewers against following her example.

 

"I know you're not suppose to admit that you smoke pot ... well just because I do it, doesn't mean you should."
