'Funny cigarette' stalks O'Farrell

THE man most likely to be Premier on March 27, Liberal leader Barry O’Farrell, will spend the last few days of the election campaign being stalked by a giant inflatable "funny cigarette", courtesy of the Nimbin-based HEMP Party.

 

HEMP (Help End Marijuana Prohibition) has been largely absent from the election campaign so far after an extended clash with electoral commissioners left it registered as a party at the Federal level (although, not in time to contest last year’s election) but de-registered in NSW.

 

However, the plastic powerhouse that is the Big Joint won’t be blocked by anything as puny as a lack of electoral legitimacy, and HEMP President Michael Balderstone yesterday announced the super-sized spliff, along with a small band of supporters, had left for Sydney and would spend the last few days of the campaign shadowing the Opposition leader.

 

Mr Balderstone said Mr O’Farrell had raised HEMP’s ire by promising big boosts to police numbers and resources without addressing cannabis law reform.

 

“(It is) Barrels of money that O’Farrell will continue to throw at a failed drug war,†Mr Balderstone said. “Better he holds another drug summit like Bob Carr’s 12 years ago, or at least gets the ball rolling on medical cannabis.â€

 

The party pitches cannabis as a cure-all for everything from cancer to global warming.

Then again it might just be the one eyed tunnel vision of the media!
