Crime lord link to $20m cannabis raid

Italian crime syndicates are believed to be behind $20 million worth of cannabis seized in Griffith in the past five days' date=' leading to the arrests of 18 people.

 

After arresting five men - four Indian nationals, two illegal immigrants - during an alleged midnight harvest of cannabis on Thursday, police arrested five more late yesterday. One was a 14-year-old boy in a drying shed containing just-harvested marijuana.

 

Police said it would be alleged the men were ordered by crime bosses to conduct the harvest.

 

"A large number of those arrested over the past four days were farmhands employed to cultivate and harvest plantations," the drug squad commander, Nick Bingham, said.

 

"We have also identified a number of others allegedly linked to Italian organised crime syndicates, and investigations will continue into these syndicates.''

 

The Griffith local area commander, Michael Rowan, said ''significant and elaborate attempts'' had been made to disguise the crops growing between vines and fruit trees.

 

"Clearly given the number of plants under cultivation the crops were destined for the Sydney and Melbourne drug markets and these seizures will significantly dent the supply of cannabis for some time," he said.[/quote']

What, so you really believe mr plod wouldn't harass personal growers if there were no commercial growers to bust? If anything they take the heat off ya.

 

Think what you want about organized crime in general. But the fact remains that there responsible for cannabis being easierly available in Australia. 

 

The Italians in Griffith and northern Queensland were the ones who first established the cannabis economy. How could any cannabis smoker see that as a bad thing?

 

Then you've got the bikeys , who may usually for the most part just be a bunch of thugs who can't be trusted as far as you could throw them, but yet have probably been the people most responsible for distributing cannabis though our cities and suburbs over the years. As a complete paradox, just think about all the pain and illnesses the bikeys have been responsible for relieving over the years, simply making cannabis available.

 

The Vietnamese are the ones who have my respect the most though. There the reason there was always a endless supply of reasonably priced and world class quality herb when I was growing up in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
