Yet more CFL questions

Recommended Posts

I know there a lot of threads around about CFL's......and everyone says you cant go past useing HPS for good buds, and CFL's are only good for veg

I have been reading all of em and looked at a few CFL vids on youtube, Dudes seem to be getting some good buds useing CFL's? the ones I have seen look like household CFL's?, small compared to the big succa growlush CFL's.

Mind you they had a few bulbs in theig grow rooms.

After breakint the 400mm cooltube the other week I decided to try CFL's in my fridge, for the time being, untill I can get my hands on a old wardrobe to fit mt 600mm cooltube into.

I know there are 2 types of CFL the 6400 for veg and the 2700 for flower. I am going to try a dual spectrum grow I already have 2 130 watt 6400 CFL's and need to get 2 more the plan is to have a 2700 above under the batwing shade and a 6400 at the rear and another 6400 on each side which in total = 520 watt

Any thoughts on this master plan as it seems to do ok on youtube or are I just wasteing more $$$

I thought about buying a tent but as I'm in a garden shed the fridge is good insulation. when I do find a wardrobe I am going to insulate it on the outside and inside, but thats in the future gotta find one up here first I will be checking out the garage sales....

Surely you must be able to get some decent buds outa a CFL setup........I'm hangin for a cone "lol"

I can only speak from personal research I've done, speaking to friends who grow and a grow box set up I made based on some other designs I found online, but I think CFLs have been greatly underrated in the grow community. CFLs have come along way and while I still support the fact that HPS are a great piece of technology. CFLs are nothing short of amazing in their own right.

A number of people I know grow under CFL bulbs and maintain a high rate of yield time after time, and my research leads me to believe that as long as you understand things like wattage, lumen output, kelvin ratings and how to recycle light, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to grow a happy plant under CFLs.

Ive seen people grow half decent plants under Aerogardens which utilise CFL lights, and NASA use the same technology to grow food in space. That's enough info in itself to trigger an interest in CFLs.

I believe that HPS will always have a strong following, but as we move into the future and we become more energy aware, I feel that CFL and LED technology will lead the way.

That's my 2 cents.

forgive my ignorance AJ but wasnt your CFLs like 11w each?......gonna need 10 of them per plant to get anywhere :scratchin:

i`ve used CFLs for mums and preflower with outstanding results....it just comes down to time. :scratchin:

MH for faster bushier growth....blue spectrum CFLs will give nice growth but not quite as fast or bushy.....HPS will also work fine for veg but are generally used for heavier buds....pace stays the same in regards to flowering/bloom times.....the red spectrum CFLs will be ok for flower/bloom if ya keep the globes sitting really close to the canopy, but the buds wont be as dense as when using HPS.

hope that helps :/

Thanks for your opinions everyone as I am planing to use 2 of each different spectrums and seeing as I only want to grow for myself I suppose any buds are better than none, I have some seeds germinating at the moment and will post a grow diary about the CFL grow, once I build a greenhouse over my vegie garden I might sneak one or 2 in there (for seeds) but then growing under CFL's cant be any worse than growing under shade cloth................?

Hi all, Iv'e been using CFL's for about a year now in a Pc grow box with good results. Iv'e been able to acheive close to 1/4 oz harvested every 4 weeks (from 2 plants) in a purpetual SOG type grow, 6 plants growing with 2 out and 2 in every 4 weeks. Iv'e up graded my flower box a little to a slightly larger box giving me an extra 4 inch's of growth height about a month ago.

The trick is to have as many lights with as biggest wattage as you can and still mantain heat issues and put the plants as close to the lights as possible. I am currently using about 95 watts in my current box and the old Pc grow was 67 watts. I also use a mixed spectrum in the flower box and 6400's in the mum/veg Pc.

I'll up load some more pics shortly if you like of the setup and results, but yes CFL's do produce some nice buds, not as big as HPS/MH but some nice ones all the same.

Cheers Johnny

Latest harvest pic, 6 grams dried ( and I already smoked a couple of small popcorn buds )
