Newb First Outdoor Grow with pics. Advice requested.

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Have a few questions to ask. Given i am inexperienced to growing and the whole concept has blown me wide open after the amount of reading and knowledge i am trying to absorb has left me with many questions about growing this plant.

Basically here is the run down.

I got a clone from a friend, She said she didn't know what sex it was or species as she was the middle man.

I thought i dont care i'm just gonna give it a crack and see what happens.

So had the clone in a little pot for oh maybe 2 months then i re-potted it into the bigger one, see pics below.

From all the reading, i threw in the best potting mix i could and then gave it a half strength feed of a combination of nutes that i read all over this forum.

I must stress i am new to all gardening. My green thumb is limited to my vegies and herb gardens, so i am still quite amateur when trying to explain certain things about this grow. Please have pateince.

Though since that first feeding i have only feed it maybe 3 times in 2 months as i have with the rest of the garden. As i recall reading somewhere that i should not over feed or over water it.

So basically this plant is 100% natural no tampering with no moving, touching, almost next to no watering, nothing. Just as if it was out bush somewhere, possibly just how mother nature tending it to be.

It is in a position where it gets alot of morning and mid day sun, then shaded by a fence as the day goes on. There are no lights, near the area at night except the moon.

I must stress again i have found it hard to read correct interpretations about the plants lighting times. I'm in Melbourne so i'm not sure if that helps.

So here come my questions,

roughly how old is this plant, from my reading i cannot grasp a accurate age due to everyone having different growing techniques.

Also im not sure but it looks to be starting to flower. Im still not 70% sure how to determine sex and that being said i'm not even sure at the stage its at that there is a sex yet.

But i was wondering if anyone out there knows or can guess would be a bonus.

Though i guess my main question i really have, is there anything i should be doing or should not be doing to enhance, speed or help this plant i've nickname Audrey along?

Thanks in advance guys any info would be great.

Cheers,

more nutrients, brother. seeing how it looks (i could be wrong, but someone will either second me or shoot me down), you want more Phosphorous (definitely) and probably more nitrogen as well - use some of that max feed mixed up at say 3/4 strength on the package - im using the same stuff, it don't like when i used full strength had to flush and cut right back. chuck some half strength seasol in for good measure... can't hurt.

Its a female. You need to give it fertiliser more often, but not the ferts you have in the photo. A fertiliser made specially for flowering. Yates Thrive for fruit and flower would be okay to try. Someone else would be able to answer your questions better.

go down to bunnings and get some Potash Power, about 12bucks for a kilo.Just dont over do it,it doesnt take make to change the ph of the water.also pistils are a way to know what gender your plant will be way before you let it get that far..

First off thanks guys all your input is more than been noted down. I will be out first thing sunday morning to get these extra ingredients.

As for your reply @ keepit, changing the ph of the soil is a must or its just something that needs to be kept in check.

As for the pistils they only just started a week ago, so i'm right in assuming the plant is beginning to flower. Hence bigrat's comment about using a flowering fert?

So if its managed to get this far without that much tlc, will using more nutes etc shock it so to speak and and create problems for me?

G'day Dj. I'm not that far from away you and am having a reasonable year despite the shitty summer. Your female now needs flowering nutes as the other mates said. I use a product called Rose Focus from bunnings, in another section of this site it was recommended to use rose nutes as the plants are fairly closely related. I can't say this is a fact, but it does work, and well at that. I've been using it for 2 seasons now and it seems to do the job. Also any pot used for growing should be the biggest you can find. Old washing machine tubs are good. My grow is getting the same amount of sun roughly as yours, but were started much earlier, around Melb. cup time, most are in the ground so are much taller, 8ft would be the tallest, average would be 6ft. All are in head except for the little one in a large pot but it has just started.

Thanks guys i'm going out today to grab all of this nutes as mentioned.

Im aware the bigger the plant shall be if planted in the ground. But due to my local soil being well "shit", clay crap there was no way i wanted to attempt it not being in a pot.

That being said, am i now significantly restricted to what looks to be a 40cm plant?

Should i now at its stage, attempt to repot it in a bid to increase it size?

Also going back to a question i still haven't gotten much info about, this lighting 12h/12h scenario. Does this apply to strictly indoor plants? Is it something i will have to look into ie. Making a makeshift "nighttime blanket" so to speak for her?

Also a totally newb horticultural question, can i make a clone from my own plant to start another grow?

Im also close by and my grow situation sounds similar to auntynorms and yourself

I purchased some rose flowering fert and have used some of that.(awaiting results)

My 2 females have just started to head in the last week and were planted round cuptime.

My only suggestion which could be way off, would be that the pot size and the lack of sun in the arvo could be affecting the plants height. Also i think this depends on strain.

The height of my plants is determined by the pot size. Its quite interesting to see actually.

(i was cheap and just used what pots i had laying around)

Note i am very new to this also
