Problem, small white marks...

Recommended Posts

Hello, wondering if anyone can identify the problem here.

Can you see the white spots on the leaves? That covers most of the plant but doesnt seem to be hurting it too much.

I have had whitefly in the past as I grow outdoors, seems only the newer leaves are unaffected.

edit: by the way, bottom of leaves look normal as can be?

Cheers, 87

Looks like a perfect example of a thrips attack or spider mite. Do a good search on all the under sides the leaves and I'm sure you'll find the culprit still there as that looks like it's only just beginning to get started and you don't want them getting established.

Try & grab a pic if you can too of them as they're great shots and be good to have the culprits to go with them for the topic.

Ok - I have whyfly defintely but the leaves didn't do this when I had them last year.

Here's a few pictures of underside of the leaves, ball point pen used as a pointer.

The larger ones look like white fly eggs - correct me if they arent.

There seems to be tinyyyyyy little things along the centre vein under the leaves also.

The problem hasnt gone too far yet I think, it took me 15 minutes trying to find a leaf looking this bad.

No idea here! :helpsmilie:

edit: fourth pic shows both problems the best... white fly eggs, and some little things under half their size...

Looks like the dreaded two spotted mite to me, red spider mites tend to stand out more because of their rusty colouring.

A Neem oil based spray will give them something to think about but you need to literally drench every surface of the plants in it (and anything else in there immediate vicinity well, if indoors spray you whole room floor to ceiling), you really cant use too much. If the plants are small enough you can actually dip them in a bucket of made up solution and give them a swirl around to get complete coverage.

Many more toxic solutions are available from hydro shops if the infestation proves stubborn, these are best used as a last resort when all other methods have been exhausted. Mites also build up a resistance very fast (just a few generations) so you may find that you need to alternate between two or more different products to prevent that happening.

Ladybirds, mantis and predator mites are all effective against these little bastards but can be impossible to gather in sufficient numbers to make a real difference, you can order them from many hydro shops now days but they're not overly cheap and probably wont hang around an outdoor grow for long.

Ok, quick update. Didn't see Neem written on anything at my local bunnings, so bought a Yates product called PestOil.

Sprayed 60ml of this diluted into 2 litres of water over the top of the 4 plants, and it has fried quite a few leaves.

Even though I did it after the sun went down, some leaves are crispy dry already after one day.

Will this recover? I'm just gonna give it heaps and heaps of water and a little dynamic lifter.

Fingers crossed. :scratchin:

Have just had an almost exact thing happen with my 1 outdoory, having looked around here i figured they must be spider mites, however mine seem to be a rusty colour, so im guessing mine are the red-spotted mites that IC mentioned above.

Got some stuff similar to the OP's, however it's the slightly cheaper version than the Yates, active constituent is 20g/l petroleum oil. Gave it a good soaking, and have had the tips of a few leaves go brown. That being said, it's been fucken hot here lately, and i probably should of waited for the temps to drop a bit according to the label, but just want these little fucks gone, considering some of the pics i've seen of what they can do.

I've just been giving em plenty of water, and a dose of fert this arvo to try to perk it back up. Doesn't look life-threatening though. Gonna try to get some neem-based products this week though, as i really don't want a huge infestation, especially with 3 white widow clones on the way
