Flipping loud fan

Hey jonnypom, Is the silencer just a large baffling that fits over the fan? If it is it'll help but where the main noise is usually coming from is the ducting as the airs rushing through it, so if you have just got normal ducting coming off it and/or into it then replace that with some baffled/insulated ducting and you should hear hardly anything compared to before. ;)

hey Oz,

The silencer is this one http://www.aussieponics.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=112, i've just got normal ducting not the insulated stuff.. since i'm growing in a tent the silencer is abit too big to fit it so ive got fan > cooltube > silencer > carbon filter.. I thought the fan speed controller might make a difference but it didnt really..

Maybe i need another brand..?

Heya jonny

In my limited experience , its pretty much as Oz has just stated ..

grab yaself some ACOUSTIC ducting , NOT the white nylon shit , get the 1.5 rated gear , easily

bought online, here in Oz , works a treat , makes heaps more difference than a controller ,

or a silencer .

Making a box-surround for your fan will also help, but, tight corners, change in diameter etc , will INCREASE the

sound the rushing air makes.

Stick with it mate, a little thought & a quick trip to Bunnings & you'll be sorted :yahoo:

take care

well my local guy didnt have any acoustic ducting.. where online can you get the 1.5 rated stuff?

These guys have some but its only rated 0.6

Yeh , that stuff Newage is selling is exactly what NOT to buy mate ! Made that mistake myself a while back. :crybaby:

I know Discount Hydroponics have it , Harvestimehydro also have it .

Dont get sucked into trying solid ducting substitutes, like pvc stormwater pipe.., only makes the whoosh , or drone , even worse

take care

:peace:

oh & btw, Im pretty sure the only way the silencer is going to be even worth fitting , is if its attatched DIRECTLY to the fan. Thats the way I was shown by the guys at GlandoreHydro, & have a cpl friends set-up in this manner , with close to silent results .Also, u could try wrapping the fan in Dynamat < soundproofing adhesive backed 'foil' for car heads to cut out road/engine noise etc.

thanks for all the tips Shirty i've ordered myself some proper ducting from harvesttime..

Yeh i was pretty gutted when i attached the silencer it seemed to do jack all in fact the carbon filter made the fan quieter..

I'm going to look into getting this dynamat stuff too.. where did you source it from and did u use a box or just wrap it straight round?

Cheers,

Jon
