Perlite and...volcanic rock?!

Hi am sortin out my grow medium, wanted to go perlite n clayballs but very hard to get the clay where i am, have been suggested to use "volcanic rock" i think eg pumas stone or whatever..is this gunna be any good? eg ph's etc it should be near the same as clay for all other purposes i think. Or just go 100% perlite..sick of orederin from out of town 4 everything haha

I cant see any reason why you would want to mix the 2, straight perlite is a brilliant medium on its own.

Just seems alot of people r doin the whole mix of both so thought i wld pull my best sheep act and blindly follow..

so if straight perlite is fine for indoor medium size ladies under lights ill just go that then?!

Perlite is an amorphous volcanic glass that has a relatively high water content, typically formed by the hydration of obsidian. It occurs naturally and has the unusual property of greatly expanding when heated sufficiently. It is an industrial mineral and a commercial product useful for its light weight after processing.

I've tried mixing the two and I have to agree with Rev that you may as well use the perlite on it's own, I didn't see any advantages to using it with hydroton.

top half of pot Perlite and bottom half Scoria Rock gives superior water holding capability and allows greater root mass and has twice to three times the airspace than straight perlite ..

personally i would not use anything else in my operation

 

nothing wrong with straight perlite either
