growing in central australia

Recommended Posts

Hi lads and ladies, I just signed up and I'm trying to find information on growing outdoors in Central Australia (close to Coober Pedy). I have already attempted this feat with one plant starting in a pot and moving it to a remote location (motorbikes.... so useful). It gets real hot here and due to New Years celebrations and the aftermath I was unable to water it for 3 days and it fried in the mid 40 degree heat. I've planted 3 more now but would like some pointers on enriching the soil (dug a hole and put potting mix in). I've got some Dynamic Booster for roses, maybe if i sprinkle that around the soil? I got no idea, sorry, this is my first time growing any sort of plant. Here's a few pics of my setup.

Nice set up but my advice would be to ditch that 'box' and get some stakes and chicken wire and put a nice big perimeter around it. Your plant if given the proper outdoor cycle which is around September to April give or take, will get 3 times the size of that little box. As your in fierce heat and look like you care about your plants, I would also suggest possibly getting 20-50litre vessel with a timer valve on the outlet and some hose attached to that to water your plant when your not there. With the location of where you are its too devastating for a plant if it misses out on its water.

Awesome, quick reply. I agree I'm going to have to ditch that cage when it gets bigger but it'll do for now to keep the roos, rabbits, etc from eating the plant. I have been thinking about some small irrigation system, I am able to walk to the location everyday (or ride my bike if I'm in a hurry), but I will need one for when I take a week off from work. Was looking at the EcoBag that someone posted on this site, but they seem to have a problem with the PayPal payment method...

Google water saving crystals  Bit late for this plant but for any future ones they will be your best friend. One of those plastic 44's buried on its side with a hole cut for the plant is a good way to grow in your climate too and help hold water at the roots. Only problem I've had is if you do get alot of rain that water-logs the ground it will also water-log the drums if u don't put the bung back in.

Peace MM
