im going to get either a hps 400 or 700 but the place im getting it from only sell the bulbs so my question is is there some cheap method of making my own shade or something? (ie: can i just shape some alfoil and put it around the bulb in a lamp shade design ?)

also is there 'double adapter' light socket thingys or how do you guys use more then one bulb if there is only one light socket in a room ?

thnx

Double adaptor question...use a decent 6 point powerboard...and make sure you dont use more than 2400 wats thru it per powerpoint...I bought one from bunnings for 24$ with inbuilt surge protection and an illumination light to indicate power supply...yeh its overkill but it sits my needs

I dont understand if you have a balast as wel and a globe holder? If you have a globe holder you can either hang it by the holder unshaded or buy a second hand shade for 30$ or so....or make one NOT out of foil...the heat your 400 or 700 hps will throw off is enormous..youd need a couple of pieces of lightweight metal riveted together in a semi triangle shape with reflective plastic hanging down from each end

Its easier just to get a second hand shande and bulb holder...a freestanding bulb holder can cost you 25$

hmm so it seems from the looks of things you cant just put the hps globe in a normal light socket right?

also what is an "igniter" i have a 4 page price list here for osram HID discharge lamps and some say "igniter required" and some say "no igniter required"

also what is a ballast ?

the place i got the pricelist from i can get these globes at cost plus a little more as i know someone who works there but they only sell the globes and the person i know knows about as much as i do about them ;)

thnx

Dont quote me on this...but a ballast is like a mediary device which regulates the power from your power socket to your globe holder then globe...

Yes u need it....um check out some of the links mentioned in others thread of online stores and see complete lightsetups..

180 for a complete kit 400 hps...with shade, globe ballast...bulb..everything u need

the ones i were looking at which was hard to judge on a black and white sheet of paper but i picked out:

Osram "High pressure Sodium Tubular Clear Lamps (no igniter)

model: "NAVT6001" 600 w i could only buy them in a box of 10 for just under $100 which i also wouldnt have to pay all at once ;-)

to me seems like an excellent price by the looks but as i said they stock bulbs only

but theres a hydroponics store about 30-45 mins drive from here that i saw on the trading post website that is having a closing down sale (what luck) so i'll maybe check them out tommorow =)

IMO you woul be better off getting your self a light kit. if ya gunna buy a bit from here and a bit from there it will cost ya more and seeing ya dont know a real lot about lighting ya could screw up big time and that could cost a lot more. i was in your position a few months back knew sweet fuck all about lighting so spent my time reading everything i could find in the forums. then went to a hydro store and bought the ligts i wanted. with what ya learn and what the hydro shop says you can make a good start.
