Colectivize Backyard Growing Knowledge

Recommended Posts

Recently I moved from a bush block to a pair of suburban quarter-acre blocks with a house on one of them; the second block grows the food garden which is substantial. Been here about four years now. Initially I built a 1200 x 1200 x 2400 grow room and over the first years boosted the light input from 400wHPS to now, a pair of 600W in cool tubes. This does a great job BUT it is energy intensive and a $900+ hydro bill/quarter (for all uses including the grow lights and heat in the grow room) is a bit painful to a pair of oldies.

Last winter I conceived of a method to grow indoor varieties outdoors. Someone on this list called it a Light Restriction grow. We built a box that was 2400mm on a side and 1200 high, with inside area of about 5 sq. metres. The box was planted in mid-September with seedlings about a month old, grown with a 400W HPS, the seedlings grew until mid-October when they had filled the box half-way up. The light duration was then restricted to 12 hours by covering the box and the crop was harvested early December.

THE QUALITY WAS EXTRAORDINARY. That's because THC is induced largely by UV light, and around the Solstace the UV levels at 41°S are equivalent to noon in the tropics. The same varieties grown indoors are not quite as potent nor do they have quite the same buzz.

THE YIELD WAS ALSO REMARKABLE; we got about 1.5 kg from 5 sq. metres and are certain that next time we will get closer to 2.5 kg because we won't make some of the same mistakes again. This same box is now growing its second crop from seedlings started under 400W HPS about November 1 and transplanted into the box a few days after the box was cleared from the first crop. This crop is scheduled to be harvested about 5 March.

The materials used to do this grow were rough, all recycle stuff. But the position used was also rather rustic without neighbours to view anything. In a backyard situation the grow box could be neatly constructed. It could have hinged lids. It could have double lids; the first clear plastic for cold, rainy weather or for keeping heat in during cold nights when growing tropical indoor varieties; the second lid opaque. The opaque lids could be padlocked so the box could not be quietly and conveniently opened at night.

Seems to me there are other methods compatable with Suburban situations.
