water pump with car battery

Recommended Posts

Im bloody tired of carrying water uphill from the creek. I know nothing about pumps but from what I read on posts here you experienced growers hide a pump at your grow show and carry in a battery at watering times. Heaps for sale on ebay but I have no clue what I should be looking for. Im going to be pumping up hill about 200 meters. I want to carry the pump between different locations. Any advice on brands, models, size etc would be much appreciated :peace:

hi mate...

it all depends on how high the water is to the plants......the pump "head" will determine the height of which the pump will push the water.....the LPM (liters per minute) or LPH (liters per hour) will determine how much water will come out per minute or hour at the designated "head" height......

also, if you`re going to be pumping alot of water you`ll need a fairly big battery......like 50+ ah deep cycle battery or a solar setup.....or both.

the pump should have an "amp" number.....this will determine how much power the pump draws per AH (amp hour)

if you have to pump up a steep incline and for a long distance, perhaps you might like to look into a generator and higher powered pump.....or a small petrol powered pump....like 25cc :scratchin:

there`s heaps on the market....i suggest you look for something that has low decibels (something that isnt loud)....

bilge and bore pumps are submersible so they`re completely silent.....providing the power source is!...

Good luck,

Chron :disguise:

Hey Bonzajude,

Carrying water uphill is a right pain in the arse. Unfortunately, your average bilge pump, despite being silent wouldn't have the balls to pump 200m and up a moderate incline. The head on my 2000gal bilge is only about 6m, so it's pretty useless for pumping uphill. It's great for pumping on flat ground though.

Here's a few flicks of the setup I use.

I use an old motorcycle battery I had lying around plus the 2000gal bilge. I run through about 50-60m of 19mm poly over flat ground. Over that distance, I get about 10L/min. Use a wider diameter hose and your flow rate will increase due to less friction loss.

For you, it sounds like Chron is on the money. A gas powered pump might be best. A lot of growers use a Honda WX10. You'd be looking at $550-600 for one though and they can be noisy. Is low noise important at your site?

Here's a pic of the performance curve of the Honda WX10 as an example. It shows you the total flow rate against total head, giving you an indication of what sort of performance you're looking at.

Hope this helps mate. Hit us up with a PM if you need more info.

thanx Ev :) was thinking that just need to find a way of getting it in there with out anyone seeing lol, as there is a lot of traffic on my main road that is a fair way from the plot but ppl might get sus and call the cops, if they see someone pushing a wheelie bin, a lot are stolen around this area so im assuming that the first thing that would pop into somenes mind.

also......for the petrol powered pump....i here the "Robin Subaru" 25cc 4stroke works a treat :freak:

or for more grunt....the "Honda EU10i" generator........it has 'eco mode' which is nice and quiet  .......that way ya can start looking for a big fucker of a pump that`ll transfer ya water nice n high and far away in a matter of minutes :xcited:

the "bluediver30" submersible pump is fully silent and has a 34mhead @68lpm.....it only runs on 750w so ya wont over load the "Honda EU10i"generator and ya can have a nice length of extension cord without worrying about loss of power :scratchin: ......meaning ya wouldnt need to have the generator (noise) anywhere near the plants

juuuust a thought
