Darwin Mayor Takes Leave After Home Raided

Recommended Posts

Darwin Lord Mayor Graeme Sawyer says he is taking leave to deal with family issues after a police raid on his house allegedly found illegal drugs and a replica pistol.

Police have issued a summons to his daughter, 21, and her friend, 24, to appear in court on drugs charges after three grams of cannabis, half a gram of methamphetamine and one ecstasy tablet were allegedly found.

Mr Sawyer, who is not facing drug-related charges, has been summonsed on firearm charges after police allegedly located a replica pistol and a silencer in a gun safe.

Mr Sawyer today released a statement confirming he was at his Wagaman home when police arrived on Tuesday afternoon.

"My daughter and five other people were also at the house," he said.

"As this matter is under investigation, it is inappropriate that I make any further comment at this time.

"Anyone who has children realises that the hardest job in the world is being a parent and trying to do the best for the ones you love."

He said he was not prepared to discuss matters relating to his daughter.

"This is a matter that is very personal and I ask that the media please respect the privacy of my family at this stage.

"I have decided to take some leave to support my family over the next couple of days."

Let me get this right, for an 8ball of weed, an xtc tab and a half gram of speed they got a warrant to search his house? Um i think there is more to this than they are letting on.

With a good argument im sure he will get off the charge maybe just get a fine and a slap on the wrist, It was a replica, stored in a gun safe out of reach of children and wasn't concealed. I assume the pistol they found was one of those old-school plastic bb type guns that fired bright orange dovetail pellets that wouldn't go more than 15ft, i have one in its original box and it came with from back in the day when i was 10yrs old and it has a plastic fake silencer. I say this because a commercial silencer hasn't been available in Australia in over 50 years regardless to the the fact that yes a 2lt coke bottle works so dose a car oil filter with the end punched out, so does a pillow and 20 min research on the net and some time on a lathe you could build a professional looking one in an afternoon. In Qld and Vic a replica pistol is LEGAL to buy however i wouldn't get caught carrying it and if you are raided for growing the pigs might be unhappy to find such an item.

I think you are right he probably pissed someone off namely the local constabulary and they thought a bit of payback was necessary. If the man wants you the man will get you and it doesnt matter if it sticks or not.Throw enough mud and some of it will stick. When they print a peice on the front of the paper and it ends up being wrong they print a retraction 15 pages back where no one will see it.
