Google Earth And Finding A Grow Spot

Recommended Posts

Hey Gang,

I found a site in a state forrest after doing lots of driving and bushwalking. Put in money and hours of work preparing the plot and then transplanted my seedlings early one morning last weekend. The problem is as I was returning to my car the ranger was waiting for me. I told him I was simply going for an early morning bushwalk. Went and checked the girls last night and he had followed my tracks and stamped on them! I destroyed what was left of the evidence and got outta there. Now I wanna get straight back into it and have popped some more seeds. I downloaded google earth and have been looking everywhere for a new spot. Im obviously staying away from the state forrests. The spots that looked ok on google earth (that I checked in person today) are either on private property or have too many tall trees restricting sunlight. I live in suburbia but Ive got so much bush, national parks and farming land within a 45 min drive and I cant bloody find somewhere suitable. I just cant seem to find a clearing that will allow enough light and enough stealth. Any ideas or thoughts would be much appreciated.

The problem with google earth is the images are usually very old (around my area they are getting on towards 5yrs old). A lot can change in that time.

Yep I noticed they are at least 2 years old. My main problem seems to be too many tall trees restricting sun. Also parking on the side of a road while visiting a potential grow spot.

I bought a cheap moto for just that reason, means I only have to take the car out once or twice to get plants, tools and materials on site, then just use the bike which is easy to stash off the road and doesn't arouse suspicion cruising around the forest roads

Good call mate. Im in the process of fixing an old ag bike up at the moment for just that reason. State forests and national parks in my area seem to have very little in the way of clearings apart from the fire trails and I aint planting there. What I need is a unused farming paddock thats overgrown with tall grass and lantana. I can picture it perfectly in my head but just cant find one!

Bad luck with the ranger, I hope he didn't get your number plates.

I've never grown in state forest or national park, so I can't really comment there. What I will say though is that there are some ideal growing spots that can be found right under your nose in the 'burbs. I like to find the natural water courses on Google Earth and follow them. As you said, real life can be very different to what you see online so first hand recon is a must.

Happy searching.

Thanks sawyer. He prob took my number plates. But the fact he just followed my tracks and stamped the 6 plants and I later destroyed any evidence Im not too worried. Ive found a place in walking distance from my home in the burbs and did a walk through the other day. Its on crown land and it seems to be used by dirt bikers a bit. Found an old bong in the scrub... On the plus side nobody would be looking for plants there and I could easily walk in at night unseen. Also Id save a shitload on petrol. The negative is its infested with rabbitts so some discreet fencing would be a must. Also soil is pretty sandy (coastal area) not sure if thats good or bad?
