Dog Sniffs Out Drugs At Hotels

Recommended Posts

A SPECIALIST police sniffer dog operation at the weekend led to one arrest and the unearthing of two small but separate quantities of cannabis.

Several Coffs Coast hotels were visited by the Sydney-based sniffer dog and his handler on Friday night.

Starting at the Toormina Hotel at 6.30pm on Friday, the police dog identified a hotel patron as warranting further attention. A 37-year-old Toormina man was subsequently charged with possession of a prohibited drug after police found 9.8g of cannabis in his left pocket.

He is scheduled to face court on October 25.

Despite the dog reacting to patrons in both the Coffs Hotel and Park Beach Hotel Motel, no drugs were located by police.

At Woolgoolga's Seaview Tavern at 10.50pm the dog reacted to a women's handbag but again police were unable to find any drugs.

Ten minutes later the dog successfully found one gram of cannabis in a resealable plastic bag, abandoned in a pot plant in the beer garden.

The mere threat of being identified by the sniffer dog was enough to convince a suspect to produce two grams of cannabis, when confronted by police at Park Beach late on Friday evening.

Police had been told three occupants of a silver Nissan four-wheel-drive in Prince Street were dealing drugs.

The trio initially denied drug possession but when police informed them a specialist sniffer dog could be called in, a woman immediately handed over a blue sunglass bag containing a small amount of cannabis.

The 48-year-old Coffs Harbour woman was charged with possessing cannabis and will appear in court on October 25.

So how come they get to spend all this time and money looking for *grams* of cannabis, not even substantial busts, when they could be out looking for people with heroin or meth etc.

Why are they not looking for speed and heroin? Lowest hanging fruit.

I think police simply love the power to be able to stop and search people on the whim of their dogs. They love it, enforcing "the law".

I bet they simply love mass harrassing crouds of people. It makes them feel "powerful" and "important".

I would respect the police much more if they did not use sniffer dogs (they did not have the power to search somebody based merely on the dogs indication), and they did not bust people for pot.
