Fungal Gnats & Bug Zapper

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a fungal gnat infestation just when i have started the flowering process. "17days"

I have found throughout the years that when the Reptile Room gets infested the best way "chemical free" is bringing out the bug zapper & leaving 24/7 for 2 weeks & they are completely erradicated. It actually is a nice sound at night listening to them pop by the hundreds :)

Just wondering, will the black light on the bug zapper throw my flowering process out of whack?

This really is the best way of getting rid of these little buggas, i have found, & don't wish to use any chemicals (either natural or poison) if possible.

I have been sucking them up with a vacuum for the last few days morning & night & set out beer traps & sticky traps cause i'm worried that i will stuff up the 11/13 process.

Many thanks,

Not sure about your question, but I would say the light off the bug zapper would probably not help with the flowering.

As I understand it, plants dont require UV light for growth, so if its a REAL 'Black Light' you shouldnt have a problem.

Seems like most zappers arent the real deal, its a lighter blue colour that comes off them.

pretty sure any kind of light would put them out of whack but not too sure .

If you are flowering it would be good to keep numbers down leaving it with a shade to stop the light from your HPS blaring onto it so they can see the pretty colors. but i wouldnt use it after lights off personally.

also, can you kill the whole infestation with it ??? i thought that the larvae were what killed the roots and they live IN THE SOIL ??? not sure how long they stay in each state and cant be fucked looking it up. But these are some things to consider.

god i am becoming such a cynic.

Few thoughts mate...

Chuck the zappa on a timer, on for 10mins before lights out, off after 15mins lights out. on for 15 mins @ start of lights on. during rest of the day, bash em, hoover `em, nuke `em... sticky paper (they love yellow)

Look at yer soil, they`re in it... cover it with a bit of pandafilm... it does help.

IPM (Integrated Pest Management) is a slow but steady method of control... lets see some non soil growers pull that off...

Few simple things to consider... another one, get onto it before it`s an infestation. easier to deal with a few strays than a full blown colony...

Thanks guys!

Thanks Hobbyist, i did two inches of sand just before i wrote my question. This morning there seems to be small entrance holes that the gnats have exited through "but it's too early to make a judgement on that"

Thanks phreak1987, I'm not 100% on the black light. It did cost me a couple of hundred a few years ago, & i'd expect it is the real deal, but like i said not 100% sure & personally don't want to risk going back to the veggie state.

Yeah Darkspark, you have my guarantee. 100% erradicated without using any chemicals. I havent had an infestation for about a year now, but when the goanna cages have a full blown gnat infestation it is something that fills the house house with millions. It could take 3ish weeks, but my memory is telling me around 2ish weeks.actually, good idea, i may put the Zapper in a corner of the room under something for the light cycle & see what happens..

Thanks jaikai, i'll have a look at the stuff you mentioned. Unfortunately i left it till it was a full blown colony, "although it's not a large colony" about 500 a day i'm sucking up. I really shouldn't of used that cowshit i got across the road as a topsoil whilst i started flowering "oh well live & learn"
