Spasms/ MS/ Spinal Treatment

wheelie

Question

Hi Crew, Thanks for letting me join this wonderful website :D

I am fairly new to this topic (in a way :) ) and i'm thinking about using pot to treat myself and make my life a bit easier.

Basically i broke my back a few years back and resulted in me being in a wheelchair, but even those i lost control over my lower half i still get bad muscle spasm. When i say muscle spasm i don't mean 'tightness' it's more like chest muscle fits that throw me out of the chair or legs kicking up in bed and kneeing myself in the head type spasms. Leaving the hospital i was on so much anti-spasm medication that i was pretty much a zombie, and i also got the great news that the medication will probably destroy my kidney and liver in ten years.

So as fun as that was i cut back on the stuff and even thought i have the spasms, at least now i can think straight and have a bit more of a life. But lately at night my spasm have been getting worse, and even though i want to sleep my legs want to go run and kick everything which is becoming a pain. Also my left hip is always sore now because my left leg kicks are so severe and the more pain it causes, the more spasms i have and the worse it becomes.

I have heard alot of people use mj for ms, spinal cord injuries and just spasms in general so i just wanted some feedback from people on how well it works for you in treating this, and how often you use to treat it. I have used it in the past and have had a great effect. My muscles became completely relaxed, (maybe a bit too much :P ) and even my back pain went away which was a bonus.

Recently i saw that a cannabis mouth spray become available in the UK to treat people (mostly ms) who have spasms problem, but unfortunately living in oz it won't do me much good :freak: . I have researched other medication on the market but they all seem to be ineffective or have heaps of side effects, so from what i can see this will be the best option for me, but i just wanted to get some feedback form a few people around here and let me know what they think.

Thanks,

Wheelz

I don't think this is quite true. I'm led to believe Sativex is availalbe here in Oz, but it's up to your GP to contact GW Pharma directly (or other relevant authorities??) in order to obtain it. I believe the same goes with Marinol, but may be wrong. If you were able to get it, it certainly wouldn't come cheap.

I've found regular canna use (ie. daily) helps with my back spasms at night. It makes the back pain manageable, although doesn't completely cure it. I normally use traditional methods (ie. smoking or vaporizing), but also want to investigate tinctures and other oils as well, to see what their effectiveness would be.

Welcome aboard wheelie and good luck. There is a wealth of information around this site which would be helpful to you, so have a good look around and find what works for you.

G'day wheelz(iremember you from E-STREET!! :D ),i have a degeneretive bone diesease call ankylosing spondylitis- it basically is fusing my soft tissue joints e.g hips(sacroilliac-your cyatic nerve run through this joint), spine, neck, till my whole spine/neck is fused stiff (there is no cure!!)- mick mars from motley crue has it.It is very painfull especially at night and it causes a lot of sleep deprevation. It also affects my ability to walk as my nerves are getting crushed as the joint fuses. I am prescibed all the usual nasties - oxycotin, tramal ,very strong drugs that only make me a zombie!!plus large doses of anti-inflamitries.It can be so painful, at one stage that i could only sleep sitting up for 3 years!!. All the prescription drugs are destroying my kidneys and fucking with my blood pressure!!

I had always been a recreational user, but about 3 or 4 years after my diagnoses(i was 19) i found pot to be the magic elixer!!!

It lets me get some sleep(and keeps me still!) and really helps with the pain i get- i have a mate that grows white rhino and i have been using it as my meds for over 5 years(before that i lived in the netherlands and had access to high quality medical pot). My specialist is fully aware of what i do and he agrees its dangers outway the dangers of persciption drugs, for me anyway. I mostly vaporize with a digital volcano( this keeps my doctor very happy!!)

I have not taken an tramal or oxycotin in over a year and if not for cannabis i dont know where i'd be!!

All you can do is give it a try , hopefully it will give you some relief as it has given me!!

Goog luck mate :freak: wiet

Welcome to OzStoners wheelie.

This thread may interest you, I can see wietlover has already read it, it is regarding asking the Director General of Health in your state for 'authorisation' to use Cannabis as real medicine.

I would encourage anyone with stories similar to the ones mentioned above to seriously consider asking their GP to help them write the letter and include their observations/records and any other supporting material to their circumstance.

Thanks everyone, i'm slowly finding my way around, i'm a bit of a green horn as i could count the amount of times i have smoke in my life on one hand. I have thought about this treatment for years, but keep telling myself that there has to be something else out there, which always turned out to be a dead end and kept finding myself back to cannabis.

So i'm sick of avoiding it and if it gets the results that i always read about then there shouldn't be a problem.

After getting only a few hours of sleep last night i have spent the morning looking around some more and so i just have a few more questions :freak:

So as i understand there are different strains which can produce different results or effects. Like some are good for pain, others for sleep and others if you just want to get way off your chops :) I always read that people get different effects when smoking, where some say it helps with pain others say it doesn't and as i figure people get different effects from it, but could it be that people are using different strains so it makes it hard to judge what works well?

I found this killer page about the effects of different strains on medical treatments and after going through it i found the following would be best for treating my spasms and issues. ( I think Cripple Creek is named for me :D )

(Auntie Em) Crohn's Disease, MS

(Black Vietnamese) Nausea, muscle spasms, pain

(Blue Fruit) Crohn's Disease, muscle spasms

(Cripple Creek) Ankylosing Spondilitis, Hepatitis C, Degenerative Disc Disease, IBS, Interstitial Cystitis, Chronic Rotator Cuff Disease

(Krinkle x Kush x Freezeland) MS muscle spasms

(Lollipop) Cachexia, degenerative bone/disc disease, edema, general pain, general seizures, glaucoma, migraine, MS, nausea, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

(Medicine Woman) Diabetic neuropathy, general pain, general seizures, glaucoma, Hepatitis C, muscle spasms, nausea, radiculopathy

(Queen Bee) Neck/spine pain

(Sweet Blu) Degenerative bone/disc disease, diabetic neuropathy, edema, fibromyalgia, muscle spasms, nausea, neck/spine pain

So my question is should i be concern with strains and if yes which ones would be easier to get or could i even get them in qld? In the past i had no idea what i was smoking, and you just get what you got, so i'm thinking the above is just mostly to do with the overseas countries who have medical marijuana available. Basically i don't want something that would give me a high buzz, just something that would kill the muscles and nero paths. But let me know what you think.

Thanks Darryl, thats pretty cool. My old doctor in hospital said that cannabis would be the best thing for me but said he wouldn't go to court for me haha. At the time i just laughed it off and didn't pay too much attention to it, and just thought he was just a old hippie doctor. Unfortunately he passed away and i have a new specialist here in brissy but i'm not sure how keen she would be about it, but it would be worth a shot.

Thanks Snooch, I looked into it further and you can get your doctor to send a request to the Therapeutic Goods Administration and they might approve the use, i read that they have only approved four cases so far, which were rare neurological condition. The cost too was a eye opener, $12UK a day is a damn right rip off.

Haha had to look E-street up, seems like a crazy show. Yeah i think Vap would be the way to go, still looking into the process but it looks healthier in the long run. I was 19 too when i done my injury so i was young and just did what the doctors told me, which is probably where i went wrong and have wasted so many years of my life. It just so crazy that they hand these drugs out like candy, knowing well it's going to cause you problems and damage, but they won't allow cannabis because it's bad for you :)

hey wheelz , i think my e-street joke just shows my age!!! :freak: Finding some dealer wth those strains would be next to impossible( although i'm gonna try and find some cripple creek beans on the net!!) The best way about it is to get a grow goin yaself then you have total control over what ya put into yourself!! Talk to your specialist(ITS CONFIDENTIAL!!) tell him what you think, let him know your gonna vaporize it so the health risks a minimal, go in there with a heap of info, if he does not support it so be it. YOUR BODY WILL TELL YOU IF IT WORKS!!!!. I have a close friend who broke his neck nearly 20 years ago right in front of me!! He is a quadriplegic with a little movement in one arm, he has been medicating himself with cannabis for the whole time!!(me and the boys would take spliffs up to the P.A in brissy every saturday have a bbq and medicate him!!!!) Hope this all helps!!

Yeah i will have to start printing stuff off and getting a good case for my doc, might even video tape my spasms to show how bad they are for her. She doesn't understand english very well, so it doesn't make it much easier :)

Yeah i think growing is going have to be the way to go, i won't be able to do it where i am but i have a friend who i was in the P.a with and he is having the same problems and will be happy to grow it if i can track the seeds down. I'm not sure how to get that done but i'm sure the answers are floating around this website somewhere, so i will have to start searching.

Thanks alot wiet, there was someone in the P.A when i was there who use to medicate himself as well, but they called the police one day and took all his stuff, pretty sad you think they would have better things to do.

Have a think about this, your not asking her to prescribe Cannabis, your asking her to document your 'informed use' of Cannabis.

Get your Doctors head around that one simple point and go from there.

Show her the letter, show her you are serious about doing this correctly within the law

Doctors take an oathe to help people, when you get down to the pointy end of the stick they serve a higher purpose than being the messenger boys of wind-bag politicians and should have no problem speaking the truth if push comes to shove.

The White Rhino wietlover mentioned would be a good one to try. I'd be looking at Indica dominant strains that belt you into the couch :freak: anything with Northern Lights, Afghani, Kush as the dominant strain would be worth trying.

Check out the seed bank guide, you'll be able to decide who delivers what.

Hi there Wheelie,

As a fellow user of pharma pain medications to the extreme, the hunt was well worth it. I can now function in at least a semi human state. With the meds I was constantly in a fog, having to take stronger doses to manage. I still use pharma but in combination with MJ cutting the drugs by at least 1/2 even more. I have to be careful as my job requires me to drive and these taste test things make it difficult, the fact that I'm more 'doppy' on oxycontin than pot doesn't concern the pork bellies, so long as they get their arrest. It stinks

You ask about strains for specific pain personally I like to mix it up a bit. I find some relaxes my head whilst other stuff relaxes my muscles. You'll find some thing that works for you. For muscles, hash does it for me. My sister in law has MS and I have her now grating hash over a stew or casserole, but MS is a mongrel disease and what works for one may not work for another. Experiment a bit see what works for you.

Let us know how you go with your dr and obtaining Sativex. I've tried with the Dr's I see but no joy. "just keep taking your meds" they say. " this medication has medically proven results" so would MJ if they would medically test it, Assholes. I had better not start on about Dr's. I have a serious dislike for these pompous pricks.

Good luck with it all,

Merl1n
