Howdy

First and foremost I'd like to say that I haven't started this thread to run Brunnings down in anyway what so ever, just tryna work out how you can determin a no name potting mix to a well knowin brand.

I worked at Brunnings biggest production shed in Australia for about 6 months. Before I started working there I thought that each potting mix, soil, manure ect ect,was formulated to each companies species.turns out that's not alwasy the way..Trucks just roll in and dump whatever it is they have onbord and then bugger off.old mate in the loader would dump each mix, depending on what the matter was,in a bin and be conveyed ro a formfill machine, stacked on a pallet, wrapped and then loaded for distribution to Kmart,Bunnings,Mitre10 and who knows how many other retailers.(the only thing that chances is the bag it is packaged in....AND THE PRICE.

What i would like too know is how one would compare one brand of mix to another.

How do you test for nutes/goodness in straight shop bought mixes?

Brunnings basic nursery mix is usually full of fungus gnats... my daughter has bought me a few bags over the years and it all ended up filling out the compost heaps. I'd never bother with it again. On the other hand the small, pre ferted, coco bricks under the Brunnings name are highly uniform in texture and a bloody good product after a wash.

But your question is about how do we judge premixed products... my answer - after reading any information available, I plant strains of lettuces and other greens that I know very well, and assess their growth against the same strains, planted in mediums with which I am already familiar.

A lot of people here will post when they find a new product and ask whether anyone else is using it. That's also a good way of getting product information.
