Carbon Filter Placement

Recommended Posts

in order for the filter to work effectively you want the exhausted air containing the smell to be filtered. having it on the inlet side is a waste of time as its sucking clean air and not filtering any smell at all... the exhausted air would smell and defeat the whole purpose of having a carbon filter

edit* sorry mate I didnt read your question properly :)

Been exhausting thru mine for 3 years. Never had an odour problem with this method.

If you know how a carbon filter (can) is constructed, it'll dawn on you fairly quickly that it doesn't matter either way. Just if you exhaust thru it, trim the pre-filter cloth up so it fits snug internally and hold it in place with chicken mesh or similar.

You want to have it on the inlet side of the exhaust fan because if you have it on the outside, you will have condensation building up in the carbon filter from the hot air on the inside of the cupboard meeting the colder surfaces and air of the outside. This will cause the carbon in your filter to clump together and basically be ineffective. From what I understand, this won't wreck your filter - you could dry it out - but you don't want to deal with the hassle of that. Also, try and get a filter that is larger than what you need. I know this is a problem with a cupboard grow because it takes up available space but it does mean that there is more surface area for the fan to pull air through which is good for the fan and good for the purpose of getting rid of smell.

Hope that helps!
