LSD could be used to lift depression and treat cancer, doctors claimed today.

Magic mushrooms and ketamine, a horse tranquiliser turned "party drug", could also feature in the 'psychedelic psychotherapy' cabinet.

Swiss experts said advances in our understanding of the brain and of the drugs themselves made it time to look past their negative effects and investigate how they could benefit people with hard-to-treat conditions.

The drugs could be used as a kind of catalyst, the University of Zurich researchers said, helping patients to alter their perception of problems or pain levels. Counselling would follow.

"Psychedelics can give patients a new perspective -- particularly when things like suppressed memories come up -- and then they can work with that experience," Dr. Franz Vollenweider wrote in Nature Neuroscience journal.

Trials suggest that LSD, banned around the '60s, helps sufferers of cancer and other terminal illnesses come to terms with their fate.

It appears to act on brain circuits and chemicals involved in depression, anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder.

In trials, some patients have experienced rapid improvements in their condition. But if doctors were to use psychedelics to treat psychiatric patients, it would be important to keep doses low, and given over a short time period in combination with therapy sessions, the researchers said.

Experts have urged people not to self-medicate, saying the drugs became illegal for a reason.

The last line is a classic... "Experts have urged people not to self-medicate, saying the drugs became illegal for a reason." Hmmm, a 'reason' :bongon:
