lighting hrs ? Experiment

Recommended Posts

Hi there all just a experiment im going to try if i get no > replys from this.

ive been reading some stuff on the net and it says a plant likes there 16 to 18hrs of light a day to get the most out of it in grow. This is one thing every grower knows and in flowering a plant likes 12hrs light and 12hrs dark. But im led to believe that its the 12hrs of dark that turns the plant to flower.Buy that a plant does not count the light hrs but will take up to 16 to 18hrs synthesization to help it grow in the dark cycle. so im thinking why not in the flowering cycle 16hrs of light then 12hrs of dark ?

So if any one has tryed this i would like to know how you went and if you havent what are you Thoughts thank you

I have tried all kinds of different lighting ideas over the years including what you mention and came to the conclusion, stick to a 24hr clock because of the circadian rhythm. Plants out of sync with it are under stress and alot of cannabis plants can hermi under stress as just 1 negative.

There have been a few studies done on this - especially light cycles in veg. There is some small difference between 18/6 and 20/4, but that's in lab conditions. In reality, all the other variables aren't likely to be in fine tolerances - so for the average grower it doesn't make a lot of difference. Most peeps go with 24-0 to 18-6 to 12-12 for that reason.

Autoflowering strains will generally be more tolerant of odd light cycles than something without the ruderalis in it. You could always experiment on one of those.

The cannabis plant, like all plants on earth, likes a 24 hour photo-period. Equatorial Sativas use indicators other than photoperiod to initiate flowering because there isn't seasonal variation of day-length at the 0? latitude (the equator). So the 12/12 is pretty much what they're used to from the get go.

That said, yes, there are 24 hour periods of light and so on as you get closer to the poles. You don't find too much cannabis in the arctic circle, though :) Given the kind of latitude that cannabis evolved to grow in (barring some outlier varieties), it makes sense to go straight 12/12 to trigger flowering.

Like Billo said, though - if there was a significantly better way of doing it, everyone would be onto it by now :)

Great question, though!
