Labours Internet Filter

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, was just wondering, with the internet censorship that the Labour party wants to bring in, will it block this site??

Also what about other marijuana sites such as growing sites, strain guides and forums? If Labour does get elected and this passes through the senate how will you bipass the filter to come onto this site???

If Labor were to pass its internet filtering bill through the Senate, then it would be quite possible that this site and other similar ones could be blocked.

However, latest indications are that the Coalition will not be supporting the bill. This makes it most unlikely that the bill will ever be approved.

I'm sure a proxy server will be the way to go if the unthinkable does happen though.

the idea of a filter has been scrapped entierly, and im 99% sure this is an australian site, the filter was designed to censor us from incoming data from outside australia. its like when you have the door open and a big blowfly comes into your house you can close the door but the blowfly will still be in the house. It would have never censored this site, excuse my spelling

the filter was never going to just be for international sites, aussie sites could be filtered too. The list of propsed sites to block is on wikileaks, i don't remember seeing this site on the list but they'd probably put it there eventually even if they hadn't yet.

Anyway as has been said, there won't be any filter regardless of who gets elected, and even if there was it would be extremely simple to bypass, so i'm not worried. Just really angry and disgusted that our government actualy intended to infringe on our rights to freedom of speech and information like that. Not to mention how illogical the plan would be if their intention truly was simply to protect children from pedophiles.

Hi there,

Can I ask where you got your information from regarding the filter being scrapped?

Last week Julia confirmed that if elected the filter will go ahead. It has been put on the backburner for now because they know if it becomes an election issue (as it should) it will go against them. The libs have stated that they will NOT implement a filter if elected but will revert to the scheme that was already in place of supplying free filtering software to anyone who wants it, a much better solution. (Not enough to make me vote for them, but hey, it rates them above Labour).

And yes, sites like this one will eventually (if they haven't already) be added to the list of blocked sites, the ACL who is in lock-step with Labour on this one have made it quite clear that they want to block all legal adult porn, sites like this where people can get information on how to SAFELY use illegal drugs (as opposed to kids just taking anything their stupid mates give them I guess?) as well as sites that talk about euthanasia and a couple of other things. Wikileaks was already on the ACMA blocklist that was released last year.

Dear

We won!

Late last night the Coalition announced it won't be voting for an internet filter that censors the web. This comes after the Government responded to our campaign by deferring the filter until 2012 (with the likelihood that the filter will never come back in its current form).

With independent Senator Nick Xenophon, the Greens and now the Coalition all walking away from the ineffective policy of censoring the internet, there is now no way for the Senate to pass this scheme.

This is your victory. Thank you!

Check out what we did together -- and hear about the ongoing global fight here:

We've known all along that a system of internet censorship that missed the vast majority of unwanted content, would encourage the outsourcing of parenting and limit our online freedoms.

And we've been joined in these endeavours by our friends at Electronic Frontiers Australia and literally thousands of campaigners in a grassroots movement.

But firewalls, monitoring and governments blocking websites was never just an Australian problem. With our victory comes the realisation that social movements in Iran, China and Burma are still fighting for their political freedoms online. In fact, 30% of the world's population live in regimes that block access to parts of the internet.

Responsibility falls on us, on this side of the firewall, to help our friends who are forced to live with censored internet and the axing of their political freedoms. That's why, in partnership with our friends at global campaigning group Avaaz, we've gotten behind a worldwide anti-internet censorship movement -- AccessNow. Access provides ways for you to provide your voice, your bandwidth and your resources to continue the global flight.

Today's announcement is a real example of the power of an organised, mature, online movement. Indeed it was new technology and the power of online campaigning, which was itself at risk from internet filtering, that brought this campaign to the masses.

Thank you being a part of this movement,

the GetUp Team

P.S. It's an historic day for our democracy, as the headlines from Canberra read: "GetUp! High Court win overturns Howard's electoral laws." More to come on this HUGE victory...
