Police Telephone Intercepts in Drug Busts

Recommended Posts

Cannabis bought 'just for the family'

A LAVINGTON man nabbed by the Albury drug squad as part of an investigation into a major cannabis supplier has been given suspended jail sentences.

Gavin John Riley was buying large amounts to supply relatives in Corryong and other nearby towns.

Riley supplied almost 11 ounces of cannabis between September and November last year after paying $300 per ounce..

His involvement with the large drug supplier came to light in about 4500 legal telephone intercepts done by the drug squad as part of Operation Penniment which started in August last year and continued until December.

Riley, 42, of Prune Street, appeared for sentence in Albury Local Court yesterday on nine counts of supplying a prohibited drug and possessing a prohibited drug.

He received 12-month suspended jail terms on the supplying charges and was fined $500 for possession.

Magistrate David O’Connor was told the major supplier had been arrested and charged.

Police spoke to Riley on April 27 after discovering several calls from him to the main supplier.

Riley admitted having cannabis at his residence and had 20.4 grams hidden in a plastic bag inside a sock in a drawer.

He told police that was for his personal use and admitted in an interview providing cannabis to relatives.

His family would phone asking for cannabis and Riley contacted the supplier who delivered it.

Solicitor Chris Halburd said Riley had a previous drug conviction in 2002 when he grew three cannabis seedlings.

He has been using cannabis since the age of 14.

He is very much at the bottom of the scale for this enterprise, Mr Halburd said.

Mr O'Connor said there had been nine separate supply offences over a period of two months.

I accept that there was no profit motive, Mr O'Connor said.

Good point, grace!

Anything mull related is always only ever discussed in person. The fact that this guy, small fry at that (11 oz is fuck all) was cause for 4500 phone taps, is just insane. Yet given the traps do then only the foolish would continue with the blower. I wouldn't even trust a public box. There's fewer of them these days than ever, due to all the mobile phones, which means there's more resources per box to tap 24/7. I already know Australia taps more calls per year than the yanks, and no doubt even more since this article in 2002. http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2002/09/16/1032054714938.html

F!@#$ing Australia sucks balls.

Sometimes, but it beats the US...... where they'll kick down your door at 3am, shotgun your barking dog infront of young child/ family, and then charge you for the tiny amount of cannabis they find. Saw a vid linked from this forum somewhere.
