trimming roots

hi all!! im just wondering if its ok to trim the root system that is present as its getting to the point where it may block the return outlet!! there is quite a lot, there is probably about an inch thick cluster that covers the entire base of the catch pot! can i trim all of that and just leave the hanging roots?? any info would be greatly appreciated! its just a standard re-circulating system.

Thanks for the info and the welcome ill give it a go tomorrow, i just wasnt sure and didnt want to damage it as its my first attempt and i be shattered if i hurt it!! thanks again mate!!

The only thing to be careful of is the introduction of pathogens to the root system, but if you work clean and if possible add some low concentration h2o2 to your water supply you should be fine.

 

Bonsai plants have their roots trimmed regularly.
