Carbon filter vibration

Recommended Posts

Hi to all

After 6 years of having my carbon filter (1000mm x 400mm) and centrifugal fan (U310) mounted to the

roof of my grow room (2 x 600w lights), I now find the need to do something about the vibration,

as the normally empty bedroom under the the grow room is going to be used by someone.

At present, I have a 2 foot piece of ducting - (with a 90 degree bend)- coming out of the fan - which is bolted straight

onto the filter, and then venting into the roof.

If I take it down from the roof and just have it standing in a corner, I will have around 5 to 6 foot of

ducting coming out the back of the fan and into the roof, but the bend will be much less than 90 degree,

if, in fact, any bend at all. It will be much easier to play around with different types of soundproofing if

the filter is on the floor allowing easy access.

However, I am wondering if the new configuration will decrease the efficiency of the filter, in regards to

air flow, seeing as though it will be at plant level and not up high where the hot air will be.

Any thoughts appreciated

aussie

Doubt it'd decrease the efficiency of the filter. But cycling fresh air thru the room could be of some concern. Hard to say without seeing what your dealing with.

Possibly another idea for consideration would be to keep it mounted where you already have and adapt something like Commodore exhaust rubber brackets (or similar) within the way you have already have it mounted. They're pretty cheap 'n common part that can be sourced from exhaust shops and various auto parts retailers. Depending on how heavy it is, you may have to double up with them. A pic of what they look like below.

Mate is there the option to put the filter in your roof space bungeed to trusses or something and use the fan to push air through it rather than pull? Both fan and filter can be in the roof space in a push configuration and there should be some slight airflow increase also.

Seems to me the simplest thing if you,ve got the height in the roof is to reverse the fan direction, keep it bolted to the filter if you need to and soundproofed by wrapping it in acoustic foam or something, chuck your prefilter inside rather than over the top of the filter, run it vertical if you can with a short run of insulated duct vertically to a trumpet fitting in the growspace ceiling.

Edit: the easiest option might be to keep it where it is, replace the mounting bolts with hooks, run some occy strap hanging down (two lots - one at each end of the rig). Sit the rig in this occy strap cradle? You can use a 90 degree plumbing/guttering fixture to introduce a curve with the extra space rather than having a right angle. That will remove some turbulence. If you're relying on it to help cool, then you want to keep it up high.

I had an issue with vibration when I set up my tent. I just hung it outside the tent from a cross member in the shed with ratchet straps. No more vibration noises now

If you were sleeping underneath the shed, you may find you still have problems.

None at all unfortunately, plaster then 20cm space then colourbond roof, basically

the depth of a rafter up there.

The noise I am talking about can only be heard in the still of the night when no other

noise present..very very low hum, but it has been noticed.

If , like Indy said, there is no problem with decrease in flow, I may be ok to have it down

on the floor and just keep trying things until I shut it up.

The thing must weigh 40kgs so trying to balance on a ladder with that weight is pain in the arse,

especially when you test out your soundproofing efforts and it didn't work. I think for as long as it

is contacting the roof rafters,I think it is going to send a vibration to other areas of the house.

My bedroom is right next door and I can't hear much noise, however, if I bend in half at the waist

to pick something off the floor, the vibration noise is massive, if I keep bending it disappears. It must

bounce off the various surfaces in the house.

Hey mate. Just read in your other post about the room having a/c. If you're not needing it high for heat, chuck it whereever you please. It would still be moving the same amount of air. If you've got an oscilating fan moving air toward it then there shouldn't be probs with stale air. Insulated ducting will cut out a lot of air movement noise - just beware that the insulation they use is made of some particularly itchy fibreglass. Anyway, that's my two bob for whatever it's worth. I'd love to hear what you end up doing whatever you decide lol

Are you sure it makes a huge difference, Jimbo? All the stuff I've read about ventilation design indicates that pulling is only a fraction more effective than pushing in terms of cfm, but that pushing has benefits too (muffles noise - etc). My understanding is that neither method is so clearly superior that it should override other growroom considerations.

A can type filter has more surface area on the outside for coarse particulates to catch on, but a decent prefilter should render that moot. The only downside with pushing is that the fan can get more crap in it, and having the prefilter inside the cannister means it will get dirtier faster. It's also more tiresome to remove for cleaning. If this is a big deal, a cheap dust filter can go on the intake side.

If you have a little more fan than you need to replace the air every 5 mins or so. I think that it's pretty moot if you're pushing or pulling. A centri rather than inline fan is a must for a push config also.

That's my understanding anyway. Most people do indeed pull through the filter, but I think it's a pretty case-by-case basis as to whether pulling or pushing is best for a given space.

Sorry - this is OT for aussie1 anyway as a push config isn't gonna work in his space lol Just curious is all.
