Power spike cause

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if someone with an electrical background could answer this for me please.

Is the power spike caused by the bulb being lit or the ballast being turned on? If someone was using a flip flop where the ballasts were running 24/7 would the power spike every 12 hours when the other set of lights are flipped on (considering already warm and running ballasts). Is there any way of checking this out for myself??

I assumed it was the ballast turning on that caused the power spike. I also thought that running the ballasts 24/7 (with a flip flop) would actually eliminate this power spike, after the initial turn on. But I have been known to be wrong once before so I thought I had better ask.

Do you mean spike or a dip in power? I am not a sparky. A dip happens when a lot of power is used or equipment switched on at the same time (I think icbw) a spike is when a surge in power happens (again I think) that can cause stuff to burn out.

If a dip, it happens to me (depending on the time of day) when my 400 watt switches on, not much to worry about unless you pop a circuit breaker.

My knowledge of this is (as you can see) pretty limited.

If your house lights go dull for a split second thats a dip and could be caused by a big current draw in the street or your lights switching on.

I meant the startup current being different from the normal operating current, as in when you first turn the light/ballast on.

Example http://www.aussieponics.com/index.php?act=...mp;productId=57

400W HPS Ballast:

*

Power 400 watts

*

Start Up Current 2.80Amp || Run Current 1.80Amp

Or incase that seems like advertising (sorry if so)

(I might go and read that thread through properly, lot of comments from the oldies)

Major waste of time for a serious grower. If ya had any idea what ya talkin bout wouldnt need ask this question....in past i think i i may have answerd this 10 maybe 20 times. And i will again just after u have looked aswell

If u r serious about ur 400watts u wont hook it up cause will probably cause the police to knock on ur door case not many houses use 40 watts of electricity at once.

U may not be a cop but u think stupider than 1, comon bro i know ur smarter than this.

EDit: sorta thinkin its dangerous known what ur doin. keep the 400 watters to the pros mate LMFAO

You clearly have no idea of what you are on about, but I wont complain too much about that as neither do I, which is why I asked the question. Stupid people do not ask questions, they just go ahead and make mistakes, which could be fatal.

You bagged me out for making something for under a hundred bucks which would have cost at least 500. I got to learn more about electricity than I ever knew, which is a bonus. Growers are pretty stingy if you ask me, which is why they grow. Although not a grower I am stingy. But the fact that I actually learned a few things made it worthwhile for me, which I stated in the original thread that you may be referring to (which you also posted useless comments in which reinforced my view about you).

In regards to me being a cop, I have mentioned numerous times that my username is a reminder to EVERYONE to watch what they say, because if you do not think that they monitor these sites then even you are dumber than you seem.

I would prefer it if someone could answer my question, as I do not think it has been answered before in relation to a flip flop (as stated). PPG you didn't even know what one was so please don't pretend you can answer the question, as you told me to get some 20 buck timers from bunnings.

Ohh, and example means that it is an example of what I am talking about, not the be all and end all.

Please mods dont shut down my thread untill the answer is given. I apologise for feeding the troll, it is just so damn tempting.
