Prohibition as entertainment

Recommended Posts

NSW Police Association president Scott Weber confirmed last night that officers had complained the show - which pays the force for access to officers - had gone too far.

Something that I've found to be of growing concern is the apparent rise of reality cop shows here in Australia to rival those of America. They seem to be everywhere now, and it seems to me a lot of them focus on drugs and drug users. Pay TV has a whole station dedicated to crime and punishment (mainly American shows) and now Australia FTA stations seem to have taken their lead.

The fact that TV stations are paying cops for access is a particular worry. Where is that money going?? Back into the war on drugs?? Straight to the cops themselves?? Who knows?

But this idea of essentially turning prohibition into entertainment is just feeding into another industry now - the media (particularly television), and the voyeristic masses seem to lap it up. What's the answer? I really don't know, but I do find the whole thing troubling.

Next time you're watching a show like Border Control, Cops etc etc, have a look at who they are busting and for what. Guaranteed the majority of drug users they bust really weren't doing anything wrong. And a lot of other crimes (particularly car chases) that start because of the fear of prohibitiion.

Yeah there was some new one on last night, I watched for ten minutes then turned it off in disgust. All these shows are doing is getting the dumb public conditioned to the notion of living in a police state and the message is that wherever you are and whatever you do, you are being watched and if you do something Big Brother doesn't like then THIS is what will happen.

Where are the shows where the cops are apprehending robbers and murderers and rapists?

On the other hand, these shows are showing us how fucked up meth users are and imo why the cops are so heavy with their arrest tactics. Never seen a busted stoner try and fight. Sure they lie to try and get out of it, but they don't fight. It is also showing to the sophiscated viewer (like us in here) just how the war is not being won. If it was all controlled and legal there would be no more easy tv. Thats all it is easy street busts (well most of them) for tv producers.

The "First 48 hours" is good tv. The detectives actually do work to solve murders.

Wonder if it is a Rupert Murdoch channel that produces the "Cops" type shows. He fucking controls nearly every bit of media on the planet.

Alcohol fueled domestics are sad to watch. Alcohol is legal is it not?
