Hi there hazedaze,

Forget the loupe, I tried, extensively, and eventually found one, but they are fixed magnification and fixed focus. They are not worth the money.

My local battery bar had these. http://www.carsonoptical.com/Pocket_Micros...roscopes/MM-100

Best piece of gear I have. Shows up the crystals fantastically. Has its own light source and is 60x to 100x mag and has an independant focus, this is a must as at times the front crystals may be clear where the crystals further back may be browning. This focus allows you to define better and more easily than a loupe.

I see your in QLD. I Just had a quick look around and try this crowd

They sell them. If not try, a battery bar, photographic store even a kids toy shop. My first microscope was from a kids toy store. It was a bit bulky and not easy to use but it did the job better than the loupe.

Just some advice

... or anywhere selling jeweller's or beader's supplies. eg Jeweller's loupe 30x

Or if you have an old 35mm SLR in the cupboard you can use the lens from that, just take it of the camera body, turn it around and look through the end that usually faces the world. Shorter focal length lenses give better magnification, but your stock standard 50mm, or short zoom (35-70mm), should be adequate if you have reasonable eyesight.

Also, Aldi have been selling usb powered microscopes for $50... it's basically a web cam with a set of fixed lenses, but works surprisingly well.

This is what I use for quick visuals... for more detailed examinations I use a microscope.
