carbon filters

Recommended Posts

Maybe you run your cab with too high humidity and it shits up the Sok too fast, or maybe you use too small a filter for your grow?

Maybe some of these guys are better with an odor sok before their first harvest, so they can afford a flash carbon filter later.

Maybe you should chill out bro...

Maybe take a break from the chronic?

Don't get to emotional about someone else's problem.

Hope you continue your input on the forums.

dang.....a small scuffle from me posting about an odor sock....how the fuck could i have missed this....now im just commenting after the dust has settled.......me and my crappy timing :)

i dont like taking sides...i rather snipe everyone from the fence sitting position, but i have to agree with some of grasshoppers points about it not being hard to reactivate your sock, and it lasting at least 6months if your humidity is low...i went from a dead sock that let out 100% of smells to a brand new sock that didn't let out even 0.001% of smell...it was perfect beyond perfection, and cheap :peace:

normally i agree of spending big, because you get what you pay for....but if the sock stops the smell of buds from coming thru then cheap might be just as good. all carbon dies....expensive filter is money spent on the filter not the carbon. the company who made it want more cash for there so called "unique" design, not there super premium carbon.

[EDIT] : There is a restaurant in Tokyo's Yokohama district called fook-lam-moon. If you get the opportunity, i suggest you try the food.

Well I think we have all looked past one basic fact about both Carbon Filters and odor socks.

They both require fans to work.

Now, despite what you have been told about both devices so far,

there are other parameters to consider when buying an odor reducer.

This would be noise.

Fact 1: You NEED to have a centrifugal fan to run a carbon filter properly

Fact 2: Odor socks can nicely run on inline fans.

Fact 3: Both Odor socks and inline fans are cheaper.

Fact 4: Centrifugal fans are considerably louder, with more vibration than any inline fan

If you have any noise restrictions, A centrifugal will be 5 times louder than your air pump for the water tank.

You can reduce the noise of the fan by boxing it with noise insulation. I have demonstrated how this works somewhere on this forum.

Good luck,

Cyclone-

Ok, I been away and had a think, I'm not going anywhere. Thanks TD for your kind words, won't be forgotten man.

Billo, apologies, I thought you were having a crack at me and I was having a bad day.

IMO, I would not go the inline with the odor sok, just been through this and found cab temps (in a Cupboard)jumped too high due to the lack of airflow, and that was with a 200mm Inline, just couldn't give a decent air exchange rate.

You want something with grunt and the centrifugal has all that and more.

If you want to quieten the centrifugal, you can house the fan like Cyclone suggested and I might suggest adding a silencer, easy to build yourself and they work well.

hey guys and gals

Just got a few questions about carbon filters, i plan to buy a centrifugal fan with it so i don't get issues with inadequacy in air flow

1) how well do they work? do they do a good job at eliminating odor.

2)how long do they last?

3)is a carbon filter it something i will be replacing once a year? more frequently or do they just keep going and going?

4)is there a way to clean the smell out of a carbon filter and "rejuvenate" it?

thanks for your help ppl

Sylar420 out

1) You'd be hard pressed to find anything that is better than a carbon filter, when it comes to odour control.

2) 3 years without any issues here, even with continuous high humidity over that time.

3) As above.

4) I've heard of various ways of rejuvenating carbon, most I remain dubious about. So if/when I come to replace the activated carbon pellets in my filter, I'll part with the $120-$150 for a 20kg bag 'n dump the old stuff.

As for centrifugal fans having vibration problems, I yet to come across one.

:peace:

From experience...and experience only...odorsoks are total crap. I am no newbie...I have bought, used, kept or thrown

away almost every gadget imaginable. This odorsok crap couldn't even tame the smell in my mother cupboard on

a plant the is in veg- strong smelling yes.. a type of skunk..but only in veg nonetheless. It did stuff all for smell.

Hooked it up 4 times over a period of time, all with same result...ZERO SMELL REDUCTION.

So my odorsok and the centrifugal fan I bought for it, sit on a shelf.

My carbon filter which is in my bloom room works fantastically, and it is now over 6 years old.

I run aircon during late spring, summer, and autumn and this probably helps keep the moisture

inside the filter to a minimum, therefore keeping the carbon filter working.

It is mounted to the roof which is now causing some vibrations problems, as someone is now

using the room directly underneath my bloom room.

Hope this helps anyone researching their options

Ok, now I keep hearing bad things about Odor Soks, mine works fine, not a tad of smell coming from the cupboard.

I would recommend a Carbon Filter if you have the money. I think a lot of the problem is the old odor soks had poorly constructed seams and these would leak, also they do not work well if you try and push air through them rather than draw air through them. If you have high humidity this will also cause the Odor Sok not to work properly, meaning more re-activation of the carbon by chucking it in the dryer on hot for a bit (you can do this as many times as you desire over the year that the carbon lasts). I also found as they are a weave design of fabric if you do not run intake filters they will clog with dust and other airbourne particles quickly and will need to be washed.

They now have a new seam design which i think has solved the problem over the old Soks. Carbon filters are the choice filters to have but until my Sok or those of my mates fail or give these problems everybody speaks of, I will stick with it.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it =). Happy shopping. GH72

Nothing but good things to say about carbon filters ive had contact with, with the right size fan and filter you get a quiet yet 100% odor free ventalation from our grows be it veg/flower/harvest.

My setup is pretty simple bought when a combined setup was well priced $500 to $600 and Mountain Air was still made here in Aus. Its A can fan lx 250 centrifugal fan, can fan muffler 2foot tall, 3 foot mountain air filter with insulated duct from room, was switched on over 5 years ago is still spinning silently without a hint of grow or yeasty(enzyme brew) odor.

Ive got no real info on the odor socks other than they seem to suit the bottom end single light growers well, for the price and if your cleaning a small volume of air i cant see why they wouldnt best suit small grows or sepperate exhaust fans. Larger than a 3 light grow 1x 3m id be considering centrifugal fans and any of the well made carbon filters..

Little tip dont leave filters in the weather, i was given a replacement with little over a few grows on it 1.2 way through winter its casing is rusting, carbon is wet and soggy and its heavy with water from the humid conditions.. Best stored inside your home back in a box or off the ground i was shocked how fast i ruined it is a cheep knock off no brand name unit if that means anything.
