Gone to Pot

Recommended Posts

Yeah i seen sixty minutes last night and some parts were cool ,like the L.A pot shops

and all you need is a Dr's note for an illness, that part was sensible. Then they put a young girl who says she was addicted to pot and in made her go crazy and all of this other crap but she also went on to say she started smoking marijuana

since she was twelve,,,,,,12 years old no wonder she is screwed up, when she started smoking pot at 12 her brain is only slightly bigger then a childs brain, she was'nt even a teenager,,,,,LOts of us probly started smoking young but were fine..

But thats not what i'm saying,As adults being older then 18 we can buy ciggarettes that kill millions each year world wide, Old enough to buy Alcohol which kills all ages every day on our roads......Why then can't we decide as adults to purchase or grow our own Medicine...........It's Time to change the LAW and stop putting innocent people to gaol...........

P.S........I sent 60minutes an email last night while i was pissed off, i hope they read it out....;)....................

.......................................SPACELEAF..........................................

I caught most of it, and this was basically what I got out of the bits I saw.

Re. the 19-year-old "addict". Now, I stand to be corrected on this, but I'm almost certain the reporter at one stage said she started at 12 but was also in a live-in rehabilitation clinic for three years (he may have said three months, but I'm sure I heard three years). THREE YEARS??!! I mean, if that's true, give me a break. That would mean she was almost in rehab for as long as she'd been a smoker. I get the feeling we're not getting the whole story with her..

Re. the reporter. What a dick. At one stage when talking to the lady from the LA, they were standing in front of a few plants and he says something along the lines of "So you're saying I should be allowed to have this in my house? What's next, heroin?" Heroin? Come on dude, you can do better than saying rubbish like that. His cynicism was sickening.

Re. Bartlett. Typical pollie spin. A lot of emotion and no facts. The thing that annoyed me most wasn't so much what he said, but that none of his lies were challenged in any way.

I can't say I saw much balance in the story - the reporter still spun it to be a negative imo

I thought the story was fairly pathetic...

Did its best to overall present a negative image of marijuana...

As for the premier saying it causing schitzophrenia etc, there is no evidence of that, indeed the evidence is probably that pot does NOT cause schitzophrenia or depression... There is no hard evidence of this, its a bloody lie.

As for the girl Jade, come off it.. Definately feel didn't get the whole story... We are just supposed to trust the limited amount of information they provided about how the drug destroyed her life, while incidently getting her an interview on national television!

I bet she mixed with tobacco, and 3 years in a live in rehab? Again the whole things as said by other posts... More to this story...

I mean no offence but I have known 12 year old girls that have smoked pot, and I have also known ones that have injected meth at that age, and I tell you all the ones that only did pot are now fine, and many of them still smoke pot occasionally.

Pretty bad article, I'm sick of 60 minutes, when I was younger I used to like the show, now I regard it as almost as bad as A Current Affair.

What psychosis?

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study is to determine if an earlier age at onset of positive symptoms in schizophrenia is associated with cannabis use disorders (CUD). METHODS: 49 first-episode schizophrenia subjects with CUD were compared to 51 first-episode schizophrenia subjects with no substance use disorders for demographic and clinical variables. A multivariate logistic regression was performed to determine the joint relationship between variables significantly associated with CUD on univariate testing and ascertain if these variables independently predict CUD. Significance level was set at p<0.05. RESULTS: 74% of CUD subjects had the onset of CUD before the onset of positive symptoms. Compared to non-substance abusing subjects, CUD subjects were predominantly male, younger at study entry, had an earlier age at onset of positive symptoms, less educational attainment, a lower self-socioeconomic status, better premorbid childhood social adjustment, a trend for poorer premorbid childhood academic adjustment, less motor abnormalities but more severe hallucinations and delusions. In the multivariate analysis, only male gender, worse socio-economic status, better premorbid childhood social adjustment, and more severe positive symptoms at study entry were associated with a lifetime history of CUD. DISCUSSION: Although cannabis use precedes the onset of illness in most patients, there was no significant association between onset of illness and CUD that was not accounted for by demographic and clinical variables. Previous studies implicating CUD in the onset of schizophrenia may need to more comprehensively assess the relationship between CUD and schizophrenia, and take into account additional variables that we found associated with CUD. There is some pretty conclusive research that demonstrates schizophrenia risk rates in young cannabis users are increased. There's also conclusive evidence that alcohol abuse increass rates of schizophrenia. It's probably worth acknowledging this - let the pro prohibition movement spread the lies and let's try to stick to the facts. After watching the 60 Minutes Bartlett dribble I thought they made a hell of an argument for legalization. Jesus, that guy seriously makes me sick. I need a cone:-)

But seriously, I think that Bartlett is so F'ing stupid that he doesn't get that with all his bogus anti drug rhetoric that he weakly attempted to throw in - he ultimately just looks like a dick to educated and thinking viewers. Go Cal and oh as for Oz ---- like they really give a rats about what WA thinks ;).... Jesus, our politicians are even stupider than there's and when you watch a clown like Barnett speak it only adds weight to the legalization debate. Go Cal!!!

What do you mean schizophrenia risk rates? dude your getting mislead by proganda.

This obsession by the media and certain scientific communitities on the fact that teenagers who smoke pot have somewhat higher rates of schizophrenia is misguided.

It is well known schizophrenics are massively drug seeking- they abuse ALL known psychotropic substances at rates extradinarily higher than the normal population. For example heroin abuse in schizophrenics is around 800% higher than the normal population, and around 80%-90% of people with schizophrenia are smokers- typically very heavy smokers.

Indeed drugs like methamphamine cause chronic elevations in the levels of dopamine in the brain- the same thing that occurs naturally in schizophrenia- and this is known to be associated with compulsive drug seeking behaviour.

Various reputable studies have tried to look at the incidence of marijuana smoking in a community, and the incidence of schizophrenia and have FAILED to find a link between psychosis and pot. Indeed schizophrenia is quite stable in most communities at around 1% of the population- doesn't matter how much pot people are smoking in those communities:

Here is a bit of info about the Keele study- a very important study.. Unfortunately I don't have direct link at the moment:

http://ukcia.org/wordpress/?p=76

“This study does not therefore support the … link between cannabis use and incidence of psychotic disorders,” the study concludes, adding “This concurs with other reports indicating that increases in population cannabis use have not been followed by increases in psychotic incidence.”

This study was of OVER 600,000 medical records- it was a MASSIVE study, and blows out of the water the idea that marijuana is a CAUSE of schizophrenia... I mean its a joke.. even when its said to be a cause, the incidence is often put down to around 10% of cases of schizophrenia are attributable to marijuana.. That works out to be a 1 in 1000 risk... The effort by the media and government to blame a 1 in 1000 risk of psychosis- a rare and highly dubious association- its a joke.

Marijuana does not cause psychosis in people that are otherwise not already going to develop it..

I am damn tired of the reefer madness hysteria.. I am a very heavy smoker of pot, even i myself was once warned by a psychiatrist that if I ever smoked pot (which i have been doing for many years now), I would go psychotic.. I just don't believe marijuana causes psychosis in people that don't already have the disposition.

Nice work there cybergenesis. :D

Anyone else notice the choppercopper (state drug squad commander Nick Bingham) has a real hard time lying.

COMMANDER NICK BINGHAM: The green weed, cannabis, is the most prolifically used drug in the in the country. It outstrips all the other drugs combined, and we hope if we disrupt it enough, people will stop. Well, they'll never stop using it, (HAND COVERS MOUTH FOR A LIE NOW>>) we're hoping some people will stop using it.

Wonder what he really means.. (we hope no one stops using it and to continue ripping crops for a living? .. it's fun wearing camo and riding in choppers for no reason on the taxpayer dollar..)

Maybe he knows no one will stop using cannabis and that the only harm to come from it, is prohibition. :D
