clones yellowing and dieing before shooting roots.

Recommended Posts

allrite, well everytime i seem to take cutting, the leaves seem to go yellow and die off. between 20-50% of the growth dies before they shoot roots. After they shoot roots the clones pickup with 7 days and are helathy again. But at this stage all the clones are at an uneven rate of growth.

i am trying a SEA OF GREEN style grow in my new rooms. So all clones need to have healthy even consistent growth. Therefor i need to set all the paramaters correct. Spending the money isnt an issue - as long as the end product is beautiful clones.

i am using a 130CFL big globe about 40cm away from clones in small humidi crib with heat mat.

clones in rockwool, use clone-x gel and spray with clone-2-xs..

my local hydro chick says the light is too close, and not enough humidity..

what are your peoples opinions ??

i am currently setting up 2 new grow rooms, with a SEA OF GREEN approach... so i need to perfect my cloning - as i need to achieve near 130-160 perfect clones with even vigerous growth.

i am obviously going to need quite a few large humidi cribs with adjustable temp heatmats. what else is recomended ?

whats the best lighting for clones ? i know they long cool tubes can be used, but they need to be basically touching the cuttings dont they ?? cant be used with the humidi cribs ?

i cant exactly seem to find a a tute on how-to take & root the perfect clone. every tute i do find are all the same. just show you how to take the cutting and put it into rockwool...

thanks

yea i see you need even cloning and growth aye

im only guessing here, but i agree with too intense a light, too early .. its like you are pushing them before they have their own support system .. they dont need strong light straight away :P

i sit mine in the laundry window and they just cop the daylight that comes in and seeing as its winter its not real bright

and supplement the daylight with couple little fluros to keep them in veg

until they root anyways

do you use a bottom heat pad

:D

hey frazz, yeh i use a heat mat.

does anyone here use them long CFL globes ? like the 80cm 'ish long ones ??

i need to approach the clone setup in the right way, as i see this stage nearly the most important part to execute properly.,

if this stage fails, as does the whole SOG idea...

i see on the internet thease clone tray things, that get barely any light into them. ive just been reading that cuttings dont need alot of light. therfor them CFL cooltubes work great.

i am currently using 1 of them 130 CFL BIG globes. same shape/design as energy saving bulb, just 20 times bigger.

Hi allhailthebud,I use a {130watt} {14000k} spectrum cfl for my clones, it rips mate an i have never had any trouble with it ,if you are getting to much light just put a bit of white paper towel on top of your plastic lid, that will fix that problem for you :D best of luck with your clones. :P .

hey dingo,

yeh mate, thats the one i use the 14000k spec.

hmm.. how far away are your lights ??

does everyone clone in rockwool ?? what opinions on GENUINE jiffy brand pots ??

seeing i will need to clone near 200 at a time, im thinking of leaning toward the long 'cool tubes' im STILL trying to find some decent info on clone setups but most things just look like comercial chinese shit..

can anyone give me temps, levels of humidity the clones should be at ??

well the fastest rooting i got was somewhere round 26-28 degrees ambient temp, rockwool

you dont keep the rockwool too wet do you , cause that slows root development , no oxygen

you take fairly thick cuts cause they seem to strike roots better / faster

never tried it but they reckon you starve the clone donor for a few days, no nutes just plain water and they build up starches in the stems or something and makes it a lot easier for the cuts to strike roots :P

hey frazz,

hmm, everyone seems to have different advice.

my local hydro chick says no thicker then a matchstick. 95% humidity, and that the rockwool should not be soaking wet, just damp. she says the rockwool should not need watering untill they strike roots.

ill guess ill give all methods a shot at once, use 10 different clone domes, different style in each. 1 batch will surely have to show itself over the others.

i allways kept my rockwool SOAKING wet, so theres my first problem. light too close aswell, my hydro chick swears upon the 4ft fluro batterns. recomends 2 x sylvania 4ft fluros with a normal 4ft fluro inbetween.

i think i remember this dude off this forum back in the day (dont get me wrong he/she may still be around) 'Al B. Fuct'

i found this AWESOME EXCELLENT TERIFFIC tute on how to take clones.. bloody brillient.

heres the link.

http://www.rollitup.org/hydroponics-aeropo...s-rockwool.html

just note i am not a member of that site nor do i endorse the site i mearly use it for info.. well i do now anyway...

excellent tute once again, a good read for anyone.

COPYED FROM THAT ABOVE LINK -- "And here we are on day 10. No yellow leaves! Yellowing leaves are a sign of excessively high air temp or overwatering. Cubes in the left-hand tray have not set root just yet. I only need 20-21 clones per flowering batch. Extras become mother plants- or compost!"

so theres my yellowing problem...

Sounds like you have some issues going on there...

I used to use rockwool (still do if I need to - just remember that rw holds a LOT of water) but now I prefer the jiffy pellets - they seem to hold a better moisture level for my clones

You want the medium to be damp - not soaking wet!!!!

That and your light might be a tad too powerful for them at such a tender age - I use the 2ft batton type fluros sitting about 8inches above them, and lowered as they develop their roots and new leaves

I use the light above the humidity crib cover at first and the plastic diffuses the light nicely

A heat mat set to 28C is also a must and my ambient temps are somewhere around 25 - 28C

The lower the ambient temp and the lower the root zone temp are, the slower your clones will develop - same as with your grow room - plants grow slower in cooler temps

Good luck,

Jimbo :peace:
