Cops seize 'MardiGrass cannabis'

30th April 2010

POLICE have seized more than $100,000 worth of cannabis believed destined for sale at this weekend's MardiGrass Festival at Nimbin.

Officers discovered the cannabis in a number of locations while visiting a property on Cadell Road at Mount Burrell on an unrelated matter on Thursday night.

"Upon entering the home, a bus and lean-to, police located a quantity of cannabis in plastic bags," police said in a statement on Friday.

A total of 44 cannabis plants ranging from seedlings to 1.8 metres in size were also found on the property.

"Police believe the drugs, with an estimated potential street value of $110,000, were destined for sale at Nimbin during the annual MardiGrass Festival, which starts (on Friday)," police said.

A man and woman, aged 48 and 58, respectively, were arrested at the property.

The man was charged with supplying and possessing a prohibited drug and cultivating a prohibited plant and has been refused bail to face Tweed Heads Local Court on Friday.

The woman has been given notice to appear at the same court on May 17.

Police plan to target drug offences at the annual counter-cultural event.

Festival highlights include a cannabis law reform rally, bong throwing, a Kombi convoy and "hemp olympix".

What a load of bull, Queensland cops were claiming the same thing with every drug bust leading up to schoolies, typical press release spin.

I spose they will try to use this to justify their hardline attitude at MG lol
