Total noob wants to start growing

Hi,

 

I used to think weed grew everywhere (unless stomped on, eaten or stolen..) but after a look at some posts I'm totally overwhelmed!! I have read around but just a few quick questions:

 

1. Can I plant a seed in a pot and move it around like Leon the Professional when the need arises?

2. I live in a rental house, I was thinking of putting the pot plant in my wheelie bin when inspection time comes. How realistic is this?

3. If I have it indoors, can any bugs/diseases kill it?

4. How long does it take from seed to first smoke, on average?

5. How complicated is hydro, in it's simplest form, ie for one or two plants? How much can I expect to spend?

6. How many harvested grams can I expect from 1 plant assuming it grows without any problems?

1. I used to move my plant around during the whole growing cycle, for one reason or another never caused to many problems.

 

2. during first few weeks of vegging when its small i could see it possible to put in a wheelie bin to hide it for a little bit, but it needs to be in the direct sunlight.

 

3. you can still get bugs indoors.

 

4. depends outdoor took me over half a year then u gotta dry it and cure it, indoors is alot shorter though.

 

5. Iv never done hydro so no clue

 

6. how long is a peice of string? it can vary from strain to how longit was vegged for to how big the pots are, how often u feed it, wat lights ur using there are too many variable to take into account. My small plant was mayb 3-4oz outdoors big one will be alot more.

 

Im pretty much a noob as well but i hope this helps, wait for replies from more experianced growers haha.

you most certainly can.. have a look in the cannabis propogation section of this site and check out the pinned topic by sukonmiskunk on " a white heaven germination".. its very informative..

i also live in a rental.. i grow in a spare shower and usually pu plants in the roof when inspection time comes around.. ive read others on here that take them to a freinds for a day and stuff like that.. not sure the wheelie bin is the safest or healthiest option but i spose itll do in a pinch....... just hope the agent doesnt wanna use the bin.. i always panic that they are gonna want to look in the roof, but been lucky so far, unless theres an actual reason they generally dont look in the roof.

the certainly can.. have a look on the site in the section that covers that stuff and youll find lots of info..

 

4. How long does it take from seed to first smoke, on average?

 

differs depending on strain.. although most once put into flower take around 8 to 12 weeks.. have a look on seed boutiques website at www.seedboutique.com and it will tell on each individual strain what its flowering time is..

from seed to smoke for most indoor grown should be around 3 to 5 months depending on how long you want to grow it for before putting it into flower.

 

5. How complicated is hydro, in it's simplest form, ie for one or two plants? How much can I expect to spend?

 

hydro is pretty simple.. a bit more involved than popping the seed in and a bit water here and there but its not that hard at all.. there are some difficult systems that require some knowledge etc to run properly but if you use a simple system its easy enough.. take a look in i think its the building and construction section and there is a pinned topic at the top by sukonmiskunk on how to ste up a recirculating system ..1 of the simplest systems.. its for atleast four plants but you can cut all that in half( as i did) easy enough, just the general drift is all you need from the post you can vary it to suit your needs.. also in the same section im pretty sure there is a post on setting up a wardrobe grow, which sounds like it would be perfect for you.. also the agent cant open anything that is closed or locked and look in it that didnt come with the house.. so he/she can look in your kitch cupboards but not your wardrobes and anything you brought into the house.. a caravan is perfect.....obviously you would have to make sure to hide all smells leads and air vents leading into the wardrobefor the inspection and set it all back up when its done.. pain in the arse i know.. i have to do it 3 times in the last 12 months, twice for inspections and 1nce for a valuation .. but as long as its not noticable in any way you should be right..

 

How many harvested grams can I expect from 1 plant assuming it grows without any problems?

 

again this varies with the strain.. also depends on growing method, nutes used etc.. also check that 1 out on seed boutiques website, it tells you on each individual strain what you can expect to get per square metre of grow space..

I grow hydro in a recirculating system and from seed it takes me about 8 weeks of vege time and 8-9 weeks of flower time until harvest. You can shorten the vege time but the yield will be less.

I harvest about 4-5oz off each plant, sometimes less, sometimes a bit more.

 

Drying takes about a week.

 

Hydro is as simple as falling off a chair once you get a grip on it. Do some reading and then post any q's you can't find answers for.

 

Seed Boutiques site offers estimates of harvest quantity based on doing a SOG grow indoors - Sea Of Green in other words, the best way to get the biggest harvest but you have to run a LOT of plants so you will have to decide whether that is something you want to do.

Wow, thanks so much for the info everyone! Really appreciate it.

 

I have about 2 dozen seeds from previous stashes, how old can they be before they are useless? I've gotten some soil from the garden and put it in some lunchboxes and planted a few seeds and made sure the water was moist. I don't know whether to expect anything but I thought I'd give it a try, I've been throwing away seeds for years now...

 

Any other way to see if my seeds will germinate? How about putting them in moist cotton wool similar to alfalfa, would they sprout?

Placing your seeds in cotton wool or soil will both work as long is it is wet.

I usually float the seeds in a cup of water for up to 12 hours before planting straight into soil, just to help germination.

Good luck with getting them to sprout... if stored properly they can last years.

yeah dude just pop them in a glass of water for a day or 2 till you see a taproot popping out..

as fpr how long will seeds last, ive read on here that as long as there kept in a dark cool place they will last up to about 3 years. although having said that i grew a plant last year from a seed i found in my cupboard that was approx 10 years old.. there was about 20 seeds i think from memory and i got 3 plants from it.. 2 males a 1 lovely lady... wasnt a bad smoke, there is pics in the harvesting section of this forum.. so it just goes to show you never know.. i honestly didnt expect any to sprout.

also nitram makes an excellent point about cloning..saves time and hassle with ordering seeds not to mention money, and who doesnt want to save that where they can... once you get that 1 lady your set..

I was so happy last night, I saw my first shoot from a seed!! I was so excited I wanted to sit down and sing it a goodnight lullaby to keep it happy! This was a historic moment!!!

 

But I wasn't sure if the white thing was a root or a stem, this morning the tip of it was brown so I assume it's a root?

 

I think I made a mistake with my preparation, the soil I use is much too coarse for such tiny delicate things, full of sticks and stones etc, I should have put it through a sieve... should I do that now? I have planted lots of seeds but so far only one real shoot.

 

I jumped into this too quickly, so soaking them in water until the produce a taproot works every time? I distilled the water for a day and soaked (the second lot of seeds) for 12 hours before planting them. But this germinated seed was from the non-soaked lot of seeds.

 

Also, (and please by all means tell me to go RTFM!) the seed that germinated wasn't even under the soil, it was just on top where there was a few mm of water sitting there. I really don't want that baby to die!! Since I just used a takeaway container, is there a chance that the water becomes mouldy if it doesn't move? What should I do about my baby? I have moved it into a second pot, about 2mm under the surface, with the root (I assume) sitting horizontal, to give it freedom of choice as to where it wants to go. But the tip being brown I just hope it doesn't die! Should it be sitting in water, or in waterlogged soil, wet soil or moist soil?

 

Thanks for the tips about cloning, but I only have dry product, isn't that dead already?
