Risks of using high amounts of electricty

Recommended Posts

Okay I have done a search but I still haven't found a satisfactory answer to the question: Can you get busted from using fairly high amounts of electricity from a hydro grow?

I think we can figure it out if people answer the following questions (this is for indoor hydro growers).

Please specify if your grow is not at a residential address and answer the following questions, as more people do so we shall be able to build up a picture. If you steal electricity from the grid, also please specify this, as this is likely to significantly effect the risks.

(1) How many Watts approx do your lights consume?

(2) What State do you live in?

(3) Roughly how long have you been growing with your current light setup?

(4) Have you been raided or had any suspicious enquirers from your electricity company? If so please explain.

Also any "secondhand" reports are appreciated, but only if you directly know the person involved, so as to be sure what you have heard is accurate.

Dude some of those questions ,i'doubt that many people would give away that type of info over the net.(for security reasons) .

You'll find that most people who steal there power end up getting busted.

If your running a smallish setup 90 percent of the time you'll be right as you could tell the power company that you have a spa or an extra fridge or anything like that .......peace and good luck.............spaceleaf........

p.s Also loose lips sink ships TELL NO ONE and you should be ok.

just give it ago with a 400 watt hps in a cupboard and stop paying top dollar for your medicine when its cheaper to do it at home..

that's just bad form asking those sort of questions - peeps here don't like to share that sort of info

I have had run ins with my electricity company but all they did was send someone out to see if there was a fault causing my high bills - there wasn't and they accepted my story that it was because of my central heating - case closed

If you pay the bill on time then they really don't care

While I appreciate that people may see the questions as rather forward, if my grow was up and running I would gladly answer them. Especially if people are being careful and using an ip router, and donating members dont have their ip logged anyway. The information could help others greatly, and information sharing is only going to help the majority, not minority. If your that worried about it sign up under a different name, reroute your ip and make a post, help the community. If this is still here in the future I'll be happy to share:-) Or perhaps everyone may "know someone" who does XYZ :yahoo:

I'm interested to know about electricity metering. If people steal electricity, does the main power come thru a station somewhere that meters how much goes thru to a specific area?? So that when someone bypasses the meter and takes for instance 6kw/h of power, next time they check the station the see that and then start looking for the loss at individual points?? While I would never condone such practices, one of my friends parents purchased a house, and somehow managed to figure out over the past few years that only the lights are on the grid power, all the power points bypass it. They have owned the place for 5 years and never had a complaint, I'm just wondering where the info comes from saying the power company will work it out. Anyone here work for the power companies or have any first hand info?

Things that will attract the unwanted attention of power companies

A large bill that suddenly drops to a lower usage per quarter - they may think a power tap has taken place or you are stealing it somehow

A usually normal bill that suddenly goes through the roof per quarter

Grid searching - when they suspect someone is stealing power but can't identify the dwelling they will do a grid search

They will lookup the usage for the grid area ( say 4 blocks ) and then compare it to power usage that has been paid for and then work back from there

I have heard from a mate that a Buddhist fella moved into a new house and installed mini temples in each room with hundreds of light bulbs , fountains and running water , within weeks the Police , Power and water company folk were at his door !

His dad was the guy from the power company whos job it was to track stolen power

So if you are going to steal power , do it on a short term , dont pig out and run the op for more than 3 months

If you are going to fill a house with 26 x 1000w lights then good luck !

Interesting as well , a few years back a techie for the power companies posted a thread about digital power meters , he was working on / or knew of development of software that would detect lights running on regular grow cycles

So I'd try and get a place with the old style ones IMO

im more worried about helicopters than my power bill

if u grow large amounts and this is what u do......for a job.....you'll no doubt taken the risk into factor, all the variables and most importantly - grown a pair.

you can grow and still have a low power bill. use candles and turn everything but your fridge off, then on when u use them. cook on your bbq if u have electric hotplates.

this is all common sense. when u grow, smoke less. the paranoia will talk you out of your objective
